Summary
To find a murderer, you need a motive . . .
THE DETECTIVE
DS George Cross has always wondered why his mother left him when he was a child. Now she is back in his life, he suddenly has answers. But this unexpected reunion is not anything he's used to dealing with. When a disturbing case lands on his desk, he is almost thankful for the return to normality.
THE QUESTION
The body of a monk is found savagely beaten to death in a woodland near Bristol. Nothing is known about Brother Dominic's past, which makes investigating difficult. How can Cross unpick a crime when they don't know anything about the victim? And why would someone want to harm a monk?
THE PAST
Discovering who Brother Dominic once was only makes the picture more puzzling. He was a much-loved and respected friend, brother, son—he had no enemies. Or, at least, none that are obvious. But looking into his past reveals that he was a very wealthy man, that he sacrificed it all for his faith. For a man who has nothing, it seems strange that greed could be the motive for his murder. But greed is a sin after all . . .

Another exceptional case.
Yet another convoluted case, solved in no small part, by DS Cross’ tenacious, insightful and unique abilities.
He has become one of my favourite detectives, along with a supporting cast of characters, all bringing their talents to the cause.
Special mention for the narrator, who yet again adds a wonderful tone and pace to the tale.

Get a better narrator
I’ve listened to all the stories in this series and they’re extremely good; well written and entertaining. Surely they deserve a better narrator? The first two books had a fairly dull reader but the rest have been read by someone who doesn’t seem to have a grasp of basic English pronunciation. Isn’t there an editor on hand while they’re being recorded? I speeded up his delivery to avoid falling asleep but found myself grinding my teeth at the mispronunciations in exasperation instead.
Give the respect due to this talented author by commissioning a worthy narrator for the rest of the series.

The best yet
Tim Sullivan gets better and better with each novel . His insight into human psychology and interaction of personalities is fabulous . I adore each character for for their own merit . Cross of course, Ottey for her patience . Mackenzie for her enthusiasm and Swift for his fan boy zeal . The monk was a story of greed and how indulgence leads to entitlement and how the honesty of one man led to his death , even though he had given himself to Christ . Each novel is uniquely different and I can’t wait for the next in the series.

Really need a new narrator
I’m enjoying Sullivan’s characters and plots but think they are poorly served by the narrator. Not enough to refuse to listen, but takes enjoyment down a notch.

Very enjoyable
Twists and turns make the story addictive listening. The characters storylines are woven carefully into the story. Already looking forward to the next instalment.

Great 5 book series
I have read all 5 books and highly recommend all books. As always it is sad when you come to the end of the last book, but hopeful it will not be the end of DS Cross.

Narration
I was very disappointed when the narrator was changed for book three. Big mistake. I speeded it up a bit which improved it marginally, I might have abandoned book three, but Tim Sullivan’s stories have been brilliant so I persevered. I was however most irritated by the narrator in this book. I just cannot understand why so many, what I perceive to be a bit younger than most narrators perhaps, seem not to know how to pronounce what I consider to be fairly common place words. Traditional, fairly standard garden plants and flowers seem to be a regular culprit, but in this book it was “Benedictine”
and unfortunately it was said so often. I felt like my ears would bleed! But a great book and I was delighted see that there will be a book six in 2024. In some ways, I have thought that I wished I had read the books as some of parts are so interesting, other bits have such beautiful descriptive passages. Tim Sullivan’s Bio is worth reading, he has had an interesting and diverse working life before he wrote these books

Yet another great story
This series of books are outstanding. Excellent story line and you are immersed in the characters lives with various emotions being evoked. The narrator suits the style of writing well in my opinion, but sample first. Would highly recommend this book and the others in the series.
