Summary

All’s fair in love and war…but what happens when the war is over?

After the heartbreak of World War Two, newlywed midwife Cathy hoped Liverpool life would offer some joy. But a terrible miscarriage and the escape of her abusive stepfather Jack from prison make happiness hard to find.

Meanwhile, Cathy’s beloved granny is ailing. Whilst at the hospital, Cathy sees her midwifery friends, who are planning to open a home for unmarried mothers. After losing a baby of her own, Cathy would love to help, but for now, she must take care of her grandmother.

As her granny’s health worsens, she writes Cathy a letter. The day her grandmother dies, Cathy goes home and opens the envelope: Thank you for giving me a reason to live. Everything I have in the world is yours now, my darling. Cathy is devastated but determined to honor her granny’s memory, hoping the maternity home can be her legacy.

Just as Cathy and her friends are about to open their doors to the first expectant mothers, Jack is spotted in Liverpool. It’s only a matter of time until her cruel stepfather catches up with her, determined to pay her back for getting him locked up in prison. Can Cathy keep herself and her grandmother’s legacy safe, and see Jack sent away for good at last?

The Midwives of Lark Lane is a heart-wrenching saga about how the best friendships can help you through the worst of times. If you’re a fan of Nadine Dorries, Diney Costeloe, and Kitty Neale, you’ll love Pam Howes!

Critic reviews

"An emotional roller coaster of a read that captivated me, and had me on the edge of my seat.… The story had me so engrossed that I couldn’t get on with my everyday life until I had finished it. If you enjoy a heart-warming saga that makes for a compulsive read, then look no further than this author’s books. They are truly wonderful." (By the Letter Book Reviews)

NOT MY FAVOURITE

listened to this book but I couldn't get into it like all the others. The narrator sounded like she'd had a joint before reading the book, she was so happy, bubbly and very passionate, mind you, I did have the speed on 1.10 . I'd still recommend this book because if you like the narrator, you will probably like it. I'm just very picky with narrator's.

Too brash

I enjoyed the follow up story but the change of narrator was a mistake. She made everyone sound crass and shouted a lot. I would buy more by Pam Howes, but not if they are read by this narrator

Another great book

Whilst I really enjoyed the whole series this last one spoiled my listening experience. The narrator pronounced character names differently, used bizarre accents, was wooden and very shouty. Shame.

Great story tho awful narrator

I really enjoyed the series although I was disappointed in the narrator in this book. She tends to shout each of the characters speech but talk the story. I listen through headphones and after a while I had to stop listening as it gave me a headache. I managed to finish the story luckily. I would recommend to get the kindle version of this book if you can as the book is very good.

Great book awful narrator

This is the 3rd book of a trilogy. The first two were brilliantly narrated and I got to love the characters. The writer and narrator did a brilliant job. Then this one was totally ruined by the dreadful narrator even pronounced the main male character’s name wrong!! She made all the characters seem rough and loud mouths!! And what was all the shouting about? the narrator had one volume and it was LOUD!!! If this wasn’t the last of 3 books and I wanted to see what happened to the characters I would have give up after one chapter. The writer is very good and her books are great but I will not read another book narrated by this woman

I loved this book.

Another brilliant read. I think the narrator although good was different so the voices were a little bit harsher & louder than the first 2 books. Great story though.

Great story

Why oh why has the narrator changed? Voices and pronunciation of names different which took a lot of getting used to.

Not great

Loved the story but due to a different narrator some of the accents have completely changed, from Italian accent to some kind of English so was a bit lost. Also not a bit Scouse and almost shouting at you as she read

The midwives of lark lane

The narrator was absolutely awful all the characters had different voices if they weren't shouting they were high pitched. I was so glad when this book was finished, I will certainly look out for this narrator & avoid her she was awful. Perhaps if she had just read it it might not have been so bad

I’ve enjoyed these books until this one. The narrator has been changed and has ruined it.

Narrator on this book is awful. I can’t listen any longer. Ive wasted my credit
