Summary

A major biography of the greatest men's tennis player of the modern era.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest ever sportspeople, Roger Federer is a global phenomenon. From his humble beginnings as a temperamental teenager to becoming symbol of enduring greatness, The Master is the definitive biography of a global icon who is both beloved and yet intensely private. But his path from temperamental bleach-blond teenager with dubious style sense to one of the greatest, most self-possessed and elegant of competitors has been a long-running act of will, not destiny. He not only had a great gift. He had grit.

Based on 20 years of one-on-one interviews with Federer and with wide access to Federer's inner circle, including his coaches and key rivals, legendary sports reporter Christopher Clarey's account will be a must-listen retrospective for the loyal sports fan and anyone interested in the inner workings of unfaltering excellence. The Master tells the story of Federer's life and career on both an intimate and grand scale.

A great listen despite an annoying habit

Whilst overall I really enjoyed this book there were a couple of things which could've been better. It probably grew on me by the end of the book but the narrator's attempts at accents were a little strange. Whilst always being well written the author has a habit of going into great depth about what are essentially peripheral characters in the story. Throughout I couldn't decide if all this extra information was enhancing or obscuring the story, and if it was included for the benefit of some real insight or more cynically to achieve a word count target.

A look into Roger’s mind

Even as someone who has followed Roger’s career very closely since the very beginning, I still learned so much from this book. Christopher does so well to pick-up on the not so obvious things that make Roger stand out from other athletes at the top of their sport. While Roger is the focus of this book, Christopher also provides a lot of insight on other tennis players, including the likes of Nadal, Djokovic, Del Potro, Wawrinka and many more. I truly enjoyed every moment and really appreciated gaining a better understanding of how Roger deals with major losses. I would highly recommend this book for any tennis fan.

Amazing depth and insight

Highly enjoyable to listen to. Very well narrated and I learned so much more about RF. Also goes into depth about Novak and Rafa’s lives which was great too. Highly recommend

Truly factual

Most informative book on my tennis hero. He is to me the best in so many ways.

The Ups and Downs of the GOAT

As an avid fan of Roger Federer I knew a lot of his story already but this is detailed and well-constructed as it describes the various areas of Roger's career and life. I skipped some painful parts eg the loss in the Wimbledon Final 2019 for which I was on Henman Hill. I could have done with fuller descriptions of some of his victories rather than the defeats. I found the narrator pretty annoying. Attempts at various people's voices including Roger's left a lot to be desired. Roger sounds more like Arnold Schwarzenegger than Roger Federer! All in all a pretty comprehensive book. Glad to have it on audio as I struggled a bit to finish such a long book.

Interesting story but I would have liked more personal insight

This book was the insights into a journalist’s long-term experience with Federer, rather than Federer’s insights or experiences. I was hoping for a different book, but this was still enjoyable.

PeRFect

A captivating account of one of the greats. Clarey is clearly an accomplished Tennis Journalist and is passionate about the sport.
As Clarey states, the book is not a stats and whistles book but rather the experiences and rivalries that shaped Federer to date.
There were the odd times Clarey seemed to take pleasure in patting himself and his profession on the back, but these instances were rare and the audio performance was smooth throughout.

Interesting

A tad over reverential but plenty of interesting information, including details about other players. Competent narration but accents are not his forte.
