a masterfully crafted rendition...
...of a subculture that was born in the East, only to be tempered in the west and seeking to be embedded permanently for as long as there is a humankind.
the narrator of this Audible version further does justice to what is a literary masterpiece.
Singer gives the reader, Jewish or not a firm chance to emphasise with the the cathartic effect of what Jews call "tshuva' (repentance)at the end of what begins to be a headstrong youngster with an eye for the ladies.

wonderful and marvellous historical classic
Having returned from Lublin recently and learning of the Holocaust and visiting Majdanek death camp, I was sickened and fascinated at the plight of Jews in Poland and this city in particular. I was delighted therefore to discover this Jewish Classic novel set in the era preceding the Nazi onslaught. The descriptions and imagery of lufe within a thriving Jewish community were enchanting and foreboding. So glad this book was written and on audible! Life is full of guided experiences like this one.

Magical story of a complex character
This is an intriguing tale of a Jewish magician in late 19th century Poland who is torn apart by his own greed, lust and religious confusion. It is narrated by Larry Keith who brings out the characters in the story expertly.

I could not stand it.
The main character has nothing admirable about him. The entire tale is about his feeding his ego, lust and wealth.
no one else has their character developed.
I restarted this over and over.
As my Grandmother would have said: FEH!
