Summary
A luxury resort. Three missing women. One body.
When young London professional Alex Evans is informed that his sister's body has been pulled from an icy lake in Northern Lapland, he assumes his irresponsible sister accidentally drowned. He travels to the wealthy winter resort where Vicky worked as a tour guide and meets Agatha Koskinen, the detective in charge. Agatha is a no-nonsense single mother of three who already thinks there's more to Vicky's case than meets the eye.
As the two form an unlikely alliance, Alex also begins to suspect the small town where his sister lived and died is harbouring secrets. It's not long before he learns that three other women have gone missing from the area in the past and that his sister may have left him a message.
On the surface, Koppe, Lapland is a winter wonderland. But in this remote, frozen place, death seems only ever a heartbeat away.

Fav Jo Spain Book So Far
Nicely assembled - good use of a foreign destination and culture to provide a contrast and to freshen up a police procedural. I enjoyed the weaving of the past and present. I had been so busy imagining it in my mind, I went to watch it on telly before I remembered it was a book. Character driven plot gives it warmth and heart.

Captivating story
Excellent story set in an unusual and interesting location. Well formed characters and a plot that keeps the reader guessing. I will definitely read more from Jo Spain.

This book has everything for me, interesting characters, fascinating setting and a compelling plot. Really hope there’s a follow up.

Not her best!
I was really looking forward to this book. All her other titles are superb but sadly I found this one a little slow. Will try another in the future.

As always a total page turner, believable characters and gripping story. Just wish Jo Spain could produce hundreds of books a year- I’d listen to them all.

A little slow and predictable
Started very slowly, both in story and tempo, had to speed it up.
Story well told, if a little predictable. I had guessed the ‘lover’ well before the end! Some characters a little useless really, didn’t see the point of them.

Fantastic Book - great twists
What a great book… description of Lapland, the snow, the people is great. The mix of non recent missing women with the current murder is great. Unexpected in places… very clever!
The narration is fantastic, she does an Irish accent, Yorkshire accent so well. Read calmly and precisely.
My only criticism is the Norwegians, they sound like Londoners, I think there should have been a Norwegian accent for these people.

The story left me cold
I gained new knowledge about Lapland but the story left me cold. It was an unusal setting which provided the insular environment for the mystery to thrive. It was evocatively described.
The plot was well structured and the characters well set up with a current murder running parallel with an historic case. The historic case was set in 1990 but the female victim and her husband seemed out of the 1890s.
The narrator did very good male voices in particular, but it was a voice that did not engage me and I lost concentration. This was particularly so for the voice of Agatha our Female Chief of Police Heroine
I do hope this novel was not setting up a series for Agatha.
I am a fan Jo Spain's work and she is a skilled author but this one was not for me.
