Summary
From the bestselling author of the Charlie Parker mystery series - 'the finest crime series currently in existence' (Independent) - comes a new book for fans of THE BOOK OF LOST THINGS.
Twice upon a time - for that is how some stories should continue...
Phoebe, an eight-year-old girl, lies comatose following a car accident. She is a body without a spirit, a stolen child. Ceres, her mother, can only sit by her bedside and read aloud to Phoebe the fairy stories she loves in the hope they might summon her back to this world.
But it is hard to keep faith, so very hard.
Now an old house on the hospital grounds, a property connected to a book written by a vanished author, is calling to Ceres. Something wants her to enter, and to journey - to a land coloured by the memories of Ceres's childhood, and the folklore beloved of her father, to a land of witches and dryads, giants and mandrakes; to a land where old enemies are watching, and waiting.
To the Land of Lost Things.
For anyone who loved THE BOOK OF LOST THINGS and for all listeners who enjoy dark, beautifully crafted fables that explore the heart of the human condition: love, loyalty and sacrifice.

Enchanting 💚 absolutely loved this story. John Connolly always produces the most incredible stories. I didn't want this story to ever end. Just perfect.

A fascinating book
This book is beautifully written and absolutely captivated my imagination. John Connolly never disappoints the stories are seamlessly intertwined with old friends from The Book of Lost Things, whilst new strong and well developed characters are introduced. It is much more than a fairy tale, it is stories with in a narration which makes you reconsider what you thought you already knew and understood about life, family and the world. But at the same time it draws you away as all good stories should and leaves your imagination to soar while you are entertained and plunged into another world. It absolutely did not disappoint.

Mesmerising tour de force.
There are good books and not so good ones, some are predictable or pedestrians but every once in a while there are gems. This is one of them. There are so many stories, dark fairy tales and mythological creatures and a narrative that meanders in the best possible way. I was mesmerised throughout. One of the best book I have come across in a long time. Highly recommended.

Well worth the wait! Fabulous
I loved the Book of Lost Things so when a sequel was announced I was excited but also anxious. What if it wasn’t as good as the first? I needn’t have worried, this book is marvellous and I am almost persuaded to listen all over again straight away. Where the original had a boy who lost his mother, here we have a mother who has lost her daughter and finds herself in David’s Elsewhere. Some retiring characters but plenty of new ones too, some familiar from lore, others a bit more obscure, but all interesting in there own way. The narrator captures all these characters so well, at no point are you left in any confusion as to who is talking. Wonderful storytelling from a wonderful storyteller. Deserves to be a best seller and receive high praise.

A little disappointing after the first book
I preferred the first book. Something of the enchantment is lost in the intermittent insertion of ideology about bad men, the patriarchy, them/they pronouns, which will age this book poorly and makes it seem like Connolly is dialling it in. The character of David is a shell of his first-book self, and I’m not sure why he is here. The Crooked Man makes a reappearance like some sequel villain with nothing new of substance to reveal, and for all the fuss, he is ultimately dispatched too easily at the end. I have no idea why the Woodsman doesn’t accompany Ceris into the catacombs as he has been throughout. The Fey are just that, and why is Death a fey? As expected, it is an immersive enjoyable read, but I was ultimately unclear why Ceris had to go into the Lost world in the first place as her entire adventure had next-to-no bearing on the development or recovery of her daughter and I’m not sure how her quest transformed her when re-entering our world. Yes, a sequel doing what sequels do, I suppose. Worth a listen although I’m glad I didn’t read the physical copy.

Dark fantasy
Enthralling. A struggle between love, guilt and commitment cleverly written into a fantasy world.
