Summary

THE RICHARD & JUDY PICK

Everyone wanted her life
Someone wanted her dead

It was Hannah who found April’s body ten years ago.
It was Hannah who didn’t question what she saw that day.
Did her testimony put an innocent man in prison?

She needs to know the truth.

Even if it means questioning her own friends.
Even if it means putting her own life at risk.

Because if the killer wasn’t a stranger, it's someone she knows . . .

'An absolute belter. Could not put it down! I thought I knew who the killer was. Then I was CERTAIN it was another person! Then DEFINITELY another! Great characterisation, glamorous setting, all round FABALISS!' Marian Keyes

'A cracking read – and that ending!' Shari Lapena

'Every Ruth Ware novel is a unique and unexpected gem and this one is no exception. A heady, tense, slowburn dream of a book, multi-layered and steeped in atmosphere and peril. I loved every page' Lisa Jewell

What a story!

Ruth Ware is brilliant writer and story teller. IT Girl was again one smashing story, highly recommend to listen to IT :) Imogen Church is starring as a narrator too, and I need congratulate to both ladies for this fantastic masterpiece! Can't wait to hear next one soon. Let it be soon, please. :) Ciao!

not my favourite Ruth Ware book

I really love Ruth Ware as an author and Imogen Church as a narrator of her books. From the start this recording sounded a bit echoey and it was annoying! I did check it wasn't just my phone and played it on a number of devices. Out of all the books I have read by this author, this is my least favourite, but still a good read anyway.

Good book ruined by terrible narration

I will actively be avoiding anything narrated by Imogen Church.
I enjoyed the story overall.

Addictive and gripping, but let down by the ending

As an avid Audible listener it’s not unusual for me to devour a book in a couple of days, and It Girl was no different. The story quickly sucks you in and the narrator’s voice makes for easy listening (if you ignore the odd echoing on the recording) but the whole story (IMHO) is let down by the last couple of chapters. Having spent such time and effort weaving the story and laying small nuggets of information throughout the book, to have the climax be as it was felt like an injustice. A great listen if you’re wanting something easy to follow, but not one I’d say you HAVE to listen to. A real shame.

Yet again, another great read from Ruth Ware. This one tugged my heart a little more.

Great performance from narrator too. A firm favourite for me.

Well paced thriller

I liked every moment of this story, the Oxford College background, the importance of friendship . Even the betrayal of it. I felt the reading to be sometimes a bit irritating, though.

Recommended read

I listened to the audiobook of this novel. The narration was good but extremely slow, I had to speed it up quite a bit to make it tolerable to listen to.

The story is told from the point of view of Hannah, alternating between the present day, and her time at University in Oxford ten years earlier. Hannah’s best friend at uni was the wealthy and beautiful April. April is murdered by the “Pelham Strangler” and a porter from the university is convicted of her murder, thanks to Hannah’s testimony. He protests his innocence until his death in prison. Hannah is contacted by a writer who thinks the porter was wrongly convicted. Has Hannah made a mistake?

The story held my interest, even though I didn’t warm to any of the characters or find them relatable. Something about Hannah really grated on me and it felt like her pregnancy was mentioned in every other sentence which I found irritating.

I had a few theories of who the murderer could be, April wasn’t well liked by everyone and certainly made a few enemies. Fortunately, there was enough of a twist to keep me guessing, and I wasn’t proved right.

For the latter part of the book, I thought Hannah was being a total numpty and couldn’t believe it took her so long to work out what was going on!

Overall, I did enjoy the story and would give it a solid 3 stars. The irritating protagonist and constant mentions of her pregnancy wore thin for me. I also thought the story was a little long and could have got away with being slightly shorter.

Really bad echo in the recording

I’m enjoying the plot and the narrator. The constant echo in the recording is so bad! It’s very disruptive and takes away from the full enjoyment of it. Shame. Audible or whoever is responsible for the audio quality needs to sort it out asap.
