Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

You wait ages for The One . . . then 203 come along at once

One night Lauren finds a strange man in her flat who claims to be her husband. All the evidence – from photos to electricity bills – suggests he’s right.

Lauren’s attic, she slowly realises, is creating an endless supply of husbands for her.

There’s the one who pretends to play music on her toes.
The one who’s too hot (there must be a catch).
The one who makes a great breakfast sandwich.
The one who turns everything into double entendres (‘I’ll weed
your garden’).
And the one who can calm her unruly thoughts with a single touch.

But when you can change husbands as easily as changing a lightbulb, how do you know whether the one you have now is the good-enough one, or the wrong one, or the best one? And how long should you keep trying to find out?

Critic reviews

WONDERFUL: fresh, original, hugely entertaining and oddly comforting . . . I laughed out loud countless times . . . the most fun I've had reading in the longest time. It is an utter delight (MARIAN KEYES)
Richly characterized, philosophical, and funny. I enjoyed all the husbands, even (especially?) the terrible ones. A time-bending gem about the way we live now (GABRIELLE ZEVIN)
Brilliant, hilarious, surprising and wise. I devoured it (NAOMI ALDERMAN)

Loved it ! Such a good listen

Brilliant narration and such an interesting plot - you’ll have never read a book like it ! Easy to get on with, lots of great characters (well accented by the reader) and funny. An interesting take on the throw away nature of online dating these days - but more surprising than you’d think!

Brilliantly unique!

Loved every bit of this book from start to finish. Such a good concept and teetering on darkness by the end

A witty and thought provoking book about love friendship and being truly present in our lives

The reader did a great job with the accents helping to bring to life this wonderfully uplifting book. The author had clearly thought through what these multiple parallel lives might mean for Lauren, and although at first I thought that the book was going to just be some light entertainment I found myself considering the plight of singles in 2024 and how the dating landscape has so much potential to hurt people and warp their sense of self. Holly Gramazio treads the fine line between giving her readers a funny read, and making a far more serious philosophical point. This book really surprised me and I’m so glad that I ‘read’ it. Highly recommended.

Miranda Raisin's reading really made the characters come to life.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a really good take on relationships in all their many variations. I think the story could have been edited down a bit. It dragged a little towards the end. But I was engaged throughout, and really wanted to hear how it ended.
