Summary
Book one in the DS Royston Chase series.
When DS Royston Chase is called to the scene of a fatal road collision, his task is to identify the girl who died alongside the ex-chief constable of Wiltshire Police. Paired with the bold and strident DC Claire Laney, Chase is given the task of closing the case quickly and quietly.
But when the girl’s DNA provides a familial link to a child who vanished from her home 20 years earlier, Chase and Laney refuse to accept the coincidence. The pair start looking harder at the ex-cop’s life, at which point they encounter serious opposition. Perhaps deadly serious.
Because the establishment looks after its own, and soon it’s not only their bosses getting in the way of a thorough investigation. Chase and Laney find themselves seemingly at odds with everyone, fighting to save their own reputations as well as the case. But neither will rest until they identify their young victim, no matter what the cost....
Critic reviews
"The author is hugely talented and ranks, in my opinion, with the likes of Peter James and Val McDermid." (Maggie James, best-selling author)
"Just a word of warning - prepare to be in tears, on the edge of your seat and gobsmacked in equal measure. A triumph!" (Liz Mistry, best-selling author)

I got caught up in the first 5 minutes
Having read all the bliss books I thought I’d known what to expect, maybe having it read to me was different but As far as thrillers go this got me start to finish.

Close but no Cigar!
Story line initially held promise but the dialogue between characters quickly became contrived and detracted from this.. Could be in part be down to the almost AI like narration…

Developed nicely
Initially the narration felt a bit odd but solidified nicely. Story was a bit darned scary but convincingly became horribly possible. Characterisation of the detectives developed nicely and their character and relationship became solid and believable - to the extent that I was interested to see the development of the characters and their relationship and downloaded the next book

Not the best of his books. Disturbing crime.
Narration sounded so AI that I even checked my settings at one point. Think it affected the story for me.

A decent start to a series
Interesting story and characters. Bizarre almost AI like narration though, which really spoiled it for me. Not sure I could listen to anything else that Alister Austin narrates.

very excellent
A bit more gritty than the di bliss series but I think better for it. Good reader nicely voiced characters. Proper baddies. Well worth the listen. many thanks

A bit long winded
On the whole not bad, I liked the 2 main characters Chase & Lainey. It started well, but then about midway things started to go haywire, which had it not been the harrowing subject of child abuse, I would have have thought it all a bit tongue in cheek, which is a bit strange, but maybe I misinterpreted it. Quite drawn out and incredulous at times .Good narration apart from the children’s voices, but thankfully it was only brief.

Strange narration
A gripping tale with some odd quirky characters and a somewhat predictable in parts storyline. For some reason the narration oscillates between an awkward smug sounding voice to some really strange breathy gasps. In contrast, the characters’ voices were good but the descriptions in between seemed very dull at times due to a lack of intonation.

Phenomenal start to a series
I've only read one of Tony J Forder's Bliss series (must listen to the rest!) but really enjoyed it so was excited to read the first book in his new series. Royston Chase is a great, quirky character and I can't wait to read more about him in future books. He suffered a brain injury in the past which left him with no filter, so he tries to stop and think before he opens his mouth, but it doesn't always work which leads to some funny situations. One of these occurs when he meets his new partner, Claire Laney, and it made me laugh out loud. Laney is quite a character too as she is loud and often obnoxious, but she;s a great cop and she and Chase are a great pairing. PCSO Alison May is the 3rd person in the team, though we didn't get to know her very well in this book.
The storyline involves child abuse and it's an uncomfortable listen at times and I shed a tear or two at the end. It is well written and paced perfectly and I can't wait for book 2.
Alister Austin did a good job with the narration.
