Summary

“Anything is possible for women as we find our voice, honor our identity, work together for a common goal, and stand unapologetically with our arms wide open to the skies in a stance of pride and acknowledgment of the sacredness of the feminine.” (from the preface to the 30th anniversary edition)

The Heroine’s Journey describes contemporary woman’s search for wholeness in a society where she has been defined according to masculine values. Drawing on cultural myths and fairy tales, ancient symbols and goddesses, and the dreams of contemporary women, Murdock illustrates the need for — and the reality of — feminine values in Western culture. This special anniversary edition, with a new foreword by Christine Downing and preface by the author, illuminates that this need is just as relevant today as it was when the book was originally published 30 years ago.

Profound and insightful

I loved this book. It is not an easy read, as each chapter through myths and stories of other women, makes you reflect on your own life and the interplay of masculine and feminine energy within you.

An answer to weary women and much more!

I loved each minute of it. So many of my existential life questions are now answered. It is a light reading which doesn't lack depth.

Too much intellectual gibberish.

I was hoping for this book to clearly discuss the stages of the heroine's journey. Unfortunately for me I found it difficult to comprehend due to intellectual gibberish discussed on a connotative level. Joseph Campbell does the same with his book but I found a book by Christopher Vogler that was more transparent in discussing the hero's journey. I feel this book needs the same equivalent for the heroine's journey. This book has great narration though.
