Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A young woman pretends to be someone she isn't in this stunning novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Girls.

Summer is coming to a close on Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome...

One misstep at a dinner party and the older man she's been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources, but a gift for navigating the desires of others, Alex stays on the island. She drifts like a ghost through the gated driveways and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world, trailing destruction in her wake.

Taut, sensual and impossible to forget, The Guest captures the latent heat and potential danger of a summer that could go either way for a young woman teetering on the edge.

A meandering which compels you to keep listening

Emma’s writing is precise and subtle you want to like the main character even thougg she has many flaws , we all know someone like this .. the narrative draws you onward with a sense of dread . it reminds me of Brett Easton Ellis but obviously not as Gorey , or Salinger maybe . Anyway she delivers the kind of novel I love that’s says many things and tells Many stories without anything significant happening she is able to very accurately portray and deliver characters that resonate . I loved her depiction of the boy in the story and I felt his pain . A great American novel

Clearly we'll written and I did continue to listen til the end as I was interested to see what happened to the character but I was so disappointed with the ending.

Compelling story.

I adored the amoral anti-heroine of this novel. She causes utter chaos wherever she goes. Somehow, aided by drugs, she has enormous self-belief and confidence which lies at odds with the increasingly pathetic state in which she finds herself. The United States can be a cruel and unforgiving place, especially if you trying to make it into the affluent class. We Europeans find it hard to understand that the safety net is minimal if you have nothing. Emma Cline writes brilliantly. This is a chilling account of what life can be like outside the American Dream. Years ago, I visited Long Island and was struck by its wealth and ostentation. This novel brings the place to life.

As good as The Girls

Oh how I love Emma Cline. Her beautiful limpid writing, the sweaty sense of dread, the empathy with the narrator while still deploring them. I’m living for the next one…

Thought it was great

Strange compelling story about this young woman interloper. I am surprised by the less positive reviews, particularly around the ending which I found tonally perfect. It’s not ‘plotty’ but I found understanding the world through the protagonists eyes enjoyable and unnerving.

Jury's out on this one

Odd....I did expect something to happen at some point.....that's why I stuck with this....at times repedative....at times really good....but was a long ramble to get nowhere....and that I guess is part of what this girls life actually was supposed to be....so I listened to the end....was pretty good

Good book

This book’s ending needs you to use your imagination. I liked the story and characters self belief.

Great story excellent narration

This is a good one. Don’t listen to any reviews about a poor ending. Some people need spoon feeding. Great insight into the life of a professional leech. Highly recommended.

Hmmmm

I really struggled with this, but it was only until I got towards the end that I thought the narration might have something to do with it — there was a kind of dufusication to the male characters’ voices that I found hard to take. That said, I don’t think I’ll be rushing to try again with a hard copy either.

A modern tale

The writing is excellent and the story compels you along in spite of yourself. As for the ending- we all know Alex’s plans won’t work even before she does.
Reader is perfect
