Summary

In 2020 the United Kingdom reached a bewildering milestone: ten successive years of Conservative rule. In that decade there were three prime ministers, each in turn described as the worst leader we ever had; ministerial resignations by the hundred; and an unrelenting stream of ineffectual, divisive bum-slurry oozing from 10 Downing Street.

The Decade in Tory is an inglorious, rollicking and entirely true account of ten years of demonstrable lies, relentless incompetence, epic waste, serial corruption, official police investigations, anti-democratic practices, abuse of power, dereliction of duty and hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths.

With his signature scathing wit, Russell Jones breaks down the government's interminable failures year by year, covering everything from David Cameron's pledge to tackle inequality—which reduced UK life expectancy for the first time since 1841—through the bewildering storm of lies and betrayals that led to Brexit, devastating education cuts, serial mismanagement of the NHS and Boris Johnson's calamitous response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will leave you gasping and wondering: can things possibly get any worse?

Glad I’m not a British taxpayer…

An absolute superb recollection of the last decade or so of the Conservatives in power. How any British taxpayer/voter could listen to this without repeatedly hurling their phone against the wall in a blind rage is beyond me. The level of incompetence and corruption just beggars belief.

Depressingly accurate.

This book confirmed my absolute hatred of The Tory Party & those who have led this country into an entirely avoidable mess.
Russ Jones should be considered a national treasure for keeping track of most of the lies, corruption & sexual misconduct of those who consider themselves our masters.

The truth about government lies and corruption

This book needs to be compulsory reading or listening to every person and schoolchild from the age of 14, to realise what this government has done to democracy and governance in this country. It is essential reading.
Over the past 13 years, the conservative government in the UK has faced significant criticism for their management of the country. Many argue that their time in power has been characterized by a series of disappointments, marked by lies and corruption. The government has been accused of misleading the public with false promises and flawed policies. Additionally, various scandals have emerged, highlighting allegations of corruption within the conservative party. These issues have led to a lack of trust and faith in the government's ability to effectively govern and address the needs of the country.
This book should be a reference book of mismanagement and corruption.

Brilliant

Something that covers such a serious subject as the systematic dismantling of our democracy shouldn’t be entertaining but that’s the beauty of this book and probably what makes it so powerful.

Facts are scarier than fiction

loved this punchy straightforward summary, but had to stop listening on car journeys due to the anger it induced as well as the giggling at descriptions worthy of entering the Oxford dictionary. I credibly quite worthy I shall buy a hard copy to highlight the bits we should never ever forget when we are considering our votes, or being sold a policy. mostly it's a super accessible political book for the average person. Well read , well written

Ten years of chaos

I don’t understand the English electorate ! I’m a Scot so can’t imagine why so many English voters could have thought Brexit, the Tories and especially Johnson were a good idea. Did someone put hallucinogenic drugs in the water supply? This book is funny as well as tragic. Much of the content is known but when it’s all linked together it is almost too much to bear. And it doesn’t cover the Truss/Sunak premierships..Highly recommended

Hilarious when it's not depressing

Great audio book, well read, depressing contents, documents a decade of decline. Draws attention to the issues our country is walking head first into, and the way politicians suck the lifeblood of our country dry. It's about the Tories cause they're in government but you could probably write the same for all parties. Politics is just professional lying and this book highlights some of the practitioners.

Brilliantly written and researched

If you hadn’t lived through it you’d be forgiven for dismissing it as fiction. However, if you look at the print version, you can see the source of every disturbing fact Russell Jones relates in this book. Every few minutes there’s a sickening lurch when you remember something truly awful the Tories have done that you’d forgotten. Or something that you didn’t know about that’s even worse. Thankfully, the writing is buoyant and strangely lighthearted. Jones seems to embrace the old cliché that you have to laugh because otherwise you’d probably jump off a bridge or go on a murderous rampage. Sometimes he resorts to being hilarious, just to hold back the horror. The audiobook version is slightly let down by a bit of mispronunciation. I don’t think it’s easy to read aloud a book that’s as thick as a house brick without making mistakes, and Chris Devon mostly does a fantastic job, but some of the words come out a bit wrong. It bothered me a bit. It didn’t ruin the listening experience and some people may not even notice. Overall, a great listen and much easier than lugging the hard copy around with arthritic wrists.
