Summary

One sunny August afternoon, the residents of Cedar Close throw their annual summer barbecue. Children play in the cherry-tree lined street, tables are laden with food and the wine is flowing. For Laurie Mills, it’s her first time meeting the neighbours. And it’s the first time she discovers her husband, Robert, is having an affair.

Cedar Close has always been a nice place to live - a quiet suburban street where everyone looks out for one another and bad things don’t happen.

Until late one evening, when Robert Mills is found dead in his bedroom.

Downstairs, in their beautiful kitchen, his wife, Laurie, sits alone in the dark with her head in her hands.

She can’t remember the last few hours, but she knows she didn’t kill Robert.

The trouble is, no-one believes her....

An utterly gripping thriller about the dark secrets that lie behind closed doors. Perfect for fans of JP Delaney’s The Girl Before and Gone Girl, The Couple on Cedar Close will keep you listening late into the night.

Love the Dan Riley character.

Made me instantly want to become a fan and read all her books. Very fast pace through so many twists and turns. Just like real life. But I wouldn't want to live in a Close!

Brilliant

Very quickly into this book I had sussed it, I knew the answers. This put me in a bit of a mood but I kept with it as it was still a good storyline. Well, turns out I had only sussed a tiny bit of it, and it was brilliant when the story came to and everything fell into place. Very clever. The ending had me with a tear in my eye. Really loved this book. I don’t usually go for male narrators either but this guy was really good. 5 stars for me.

Enjoyable

OK so the plot was a little predictable bit then as the killer is revealed about half way through it did not impact the actual plot. James Lailey is a very good narrator managing a large range of accents effortlessly. All in all a good audible book which I enjoyed.

Excellent

I really enjoyed this book which is part psychological thriller and part police procedural. Detective Riley is called to the scene of a murder of a man on Cedar Close. At first sight it looks as though the wife did it. She discovered the body but has no memory of what happened. This book had me gripped right from the start. The plot is good and moves along quickly. The narrative is on two timelines giving hints of what is to come. I did eventually guess the identity of the killer though it didn’t spoil the book for me. The characters are all interesting and well fleshed out, even the minor ones. I liked Dan Riley. Unlike many fictional detectives he seems very normal - a nice man with ‘kind eyes’. Ok he has a past - a dead girlfriend who he obviously still loves - but he isn’t a drunk or an addict like so many other fictional policemen.

This is the second Detective Dan Riley book though I didn’t realise that until after I’d listened. So, it reads perfectly well as a stand-alone but I will definitely be listening to the first in the series very soon, as well as any future books in the series.

The book was narrated by James Lailey, who did an excellent job.

Brilliant book. More from this author please Audible.

I wasn’t sure about purchasing this book. I’ve had a couple that I didn’t like lately or they had terrible narration. I thought I’d give it a go because the précis was good and James Lailey is a great narrator. I’m so glad I did. Great character compelling plot. I suspect some people will complain that they guessed it early on but that seemed intentional to me - the whole book was set up for that. I see that it’s a series and I’m really hoping that audible gives is more in the series with James Lailey reading. I’d definitely recommend this book.
