Summary
Spring, 1919. James ‘Max’ Maxted, former Great War flying ace, returns to the trail of murder, treachery and half-buried secrets. Having left Paris after avenging the murder of his father, Sir Henry Maxted, he is convinced there is more - much more - to be discovered about what Sir Henry had been trying to accomplish. And he suspected elusive German spymaster Fritz Lemmer knows the truth of it.
Now, undercover in Lemmer’s service but with his loyalty pledged to the British Secret Service, Max sets out on his first - and possibly last - mission for Lemmer. It takes him to the far north of Scotland - to the Orkney Isles, where the German High Seas Fleet has been impounded in Scapa Flow, its fate to be decided at the conference table in Paris.
His mission: to recover and transport a document held aboard one of the German ships. But what that document contains will force him to break cover and race south, towards London. Can he survive long enough to deliver it?

A little disappointing
I was disappointed with this book because it felt like a filler between the 1st and 3rd books in the trilogy. It did move the story on somewhat but not enough to justify a whole book.

a good way to take your money!
whilst the story is good, the author has eked it out to at least 3 books to force you to carry on. Had i realised this would be the case i would not have become ensnared in this money making venture. Shame on you Mr Goddard, and you Audible for colluding in this shameless entrapment of your customers. Avoid.

Disappointing ending. Felt cheated
This is a complex story and you have to stick with it but the end did not reward you. I shall not be listening to the next book

There's some setting up of the story here...
...which is very frustrating but equally a little understandable to get us towards the 3rd instalment.
To fit the flow of his stories the author comes up with some very odd occurrences, but then I guess if he didn't then the 3 books become 2 books. Max sees a letter at the end of the 2nd book but before he can read it, Sadiq steals it but saves him from execution by Dombreau - why save him but steal something from him? Equally in the same instance, the man is about to kill him but then is tied up himself but Max subsequently does a deal (and trusts a man who was about to execute him) with the same fellow - it just beggars belief... he doesn't then read that letter until a third of the way through the third book and you wait until half way through for him to share it with his friends (and therefore us the reader)
That said, it's a really good yarn and one both loved and recommend - usually where authors who do this are concerned, I simply get angry - but this an interesting spy story and because it is so good, I can forgive most things...

Great!!
Great second novel in the series
I am looking forward to listening to the last book in the series. I have always liked Robert Goddard s novels and he has surpassed himself with this series. Made better by excellent reading by Elliott Chapman I won't say anymore as I don't want to give any of the plot away.

Yet another cliffhanger
OK. Book 2. But nothing to indicate it’s a continuation except when I got to the end of book 1 it just finished. The promised first chapter of book 2 didn’t materialise. Nor did the promised first chapter of book 3 at the end of book 2. How many more books will it take to finish this saga, without it being made clear they are NOT separate books about the same characters, but continuations. Also very irritated at the beginning that the narrator kept referring g to SCAPA FLOW rather than SCARPA FLOW how I’ve always to before. Four stars is generous considering how let down I feel.

Garbled French is very distracting.
The story is typical of a certain swashbuckling variety, and not badly told, but the cliffhangers and miraculous saves are starting to make it difficult to suspend disbelief. I will finish the story in the third book/installment.
The narrator’s complete inability to pronounce any French words makes it frustrating to fully embrace the international stage upon which the story unfolds. His German is slightly better, but is seldom called for in the story.

Fast-paced, intelligent story
I'm a huge Robert Goddard fan and I do like Max and Sam, so ably brought to life by the narrator (although I wish he'd get some help with his French and German pronunciation).
Will start book 3 straightaway!
