Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Dr Shahed Yousaf is a prison doctor dedicated to caring for people on the margins of society. An outsider on the inside, in Stitched Up he introduces us to a cast of unforgettable characters, including killers, con men and auto-cannibals. To Dr Yousaf, they are patients first and prisoners second—because any one of us could end up on the wrong side of the law. He tells us honestly and compassionately what it's like to be their doctor in a system that's chronically overcrowded, drastically under-resourced and all too easy to ignore.

Dr Yousaf spends his time running between emergencies—from overdoses to assaults, from cell fires to suicides—with one hand perpetually hovering over the panic button. It's not a job for the faint-hearted. But while the system is failing, he and his colleagues are doing their very best to prop it up.

In stories that are frequently harrowing, sometimes humorous and always hard-hitting, we discover how difficult life is for those behind bars—but that there is still hope for all those who dare to care.

Worth the read!

Dr Shahed shares a unique glimpse into prison life and health care challenges there. Other than being an interesting read full of funny anecdotes, this account is also a story about resilience and personal growth.

The book shows how every small actions can help even if the system is completely broken. It also raises awareness about mental health and how prison life deteriorates what's left of it in the detainees rather than rehabilitate them.

This is truly revelatory!

Whatever your views on our current criminal justice system, you must listen to this! I knew it was in dire straits before I started this, but just how shocking the state our prisons are in caught me somewhat off guard. Dr Yousaf bring new, clear eyes to the picture. His tales are gritty, raw and yet amusing, too. The couple of days listening to this have utterly changed my perspective for ever.

Gem

I'm so glad I found this in the sale section this month. What an insightful and intimate listen!

It reminded me of 'This is going to hurt' by Adam Kay. I guess the notes they constantly have to write up as a GP means that these books are so detailed and captivating.

I loved this book I've learnt so much and from a perspective I've never even considered before.

Narration was also superb.

I loved the ending, how it all came full circle.

Thank you Dr Shahid Yousef for sharing your story, I loved listening to it.

I’ve worked in prison health care. This has captured the reality beautifully. Superbly written. What a great human being.

Loved this book

I work in the prison estate so wasn’t sure what to expect having read other books written by prison staff and not enjoying them very much. I was pleasantly surprised by the way DR. Yousaf spoke so compassionately about his work, his honesty about difficult aspects of his life and just how much his kindness and humanity shine through in his writing. He speaks the truth about working conditions, hostility towards prison staff and also the positive relationships that can come from working with such damaged and destructive individuals. If you’re planning on reading a book about prison life, healthcare in particular, then this should certainly be top of your list.
