Summary
Sword of Rome: Standard Bearer is the first book in a series of novellas featuring Lucius Oppius and the campaigns of Julius Caesar.
Britain, 55 BC: Julius Caesar’s invasion of the wild and mineral-rich land is becalmed, a stalemate exists between the forces of Rome and Britain. But the standard bearer of the Tenth Legion, Lucius Oppius, is about to display a depth of courage that will change the course of the invasion - and history.
Encamped upon the south coast Caesar, admiring the courage and skill of his standard bearer, orders Oppius to accompany a native British archer and go behind enemy lines. His mission is to hunt down a treacherous Roman agent, who is recruiting Britons to fight against the armies of Rome in Gaul. Yet not all is what it seems and Oppius will fight for his life, as well as for Caesar and the glory of Rome, to complete his mission and find his way back home.

Caradoc not accurate
Although the Roman part of it is good, it was Caradoc’s father who gave his allegiance to Caesar, and it is possible the young Caradoc spent part of his childhood as hostage in Rome, which made him able to make his defence so ably in Rome. Caradoc is Claudius’ antagonist.

not exactly Bernard Cornwell. the story was nonsense and not very good. the narration was enthusiastic but boring

"Every fire needs a spark."
A short (one and one half hours) story set initially at the first moments of Caesar's invasion of England seen from the POV of the standard bearer of the tenth legion. Although interesting and an enjoyable read, it was both too short and also, to this reader, familiar in content. Could this have appeared in a longer book previously?
Good narration by Rich Gerard and free to read with the UK Audible Unlimited. Well worth a listen especially for anyone looking for a read. Thank you, Audible

Nice story, a little formulaic and predictable
A good story, highlighting a fascinating period of history. The story is a little formulaic and simplistic with rescuers emerging in the nick of time.
