Summary
An unlikely pair on a collision course with trouble.
Bounty hunter John Smoke never liked the rules. As a result of his overly aggressive - and often illegal - arrest methods, he ended up behind bars. But the Bureau wont’ let him be. Placed in the able care of beautiful, no-nonsense Sidney Shaw, his new FBI handler, Smoke needs to alter his loose-cannon ways to remain a free man.
But there is an unchecked evil festering deep in the heart of the nation’s capital. A shadow conspiracy than won’t be defeated by conventional means. A vast, hidden network of criminals with the terrifying ability to shape-shift into monsters is spreading its supernatural sickness in the very fabric of human society.
No ordinary mortal can fight the evil. But there is nothing ordinary about John Smoke. Sidney Shaw is about to discover for herself as she follows Smoke’s trail into the darkest, most secret corners of Washington, DC. Smoke and Sidney must fight the evil that will stop at nothing to tear them apart while destroying a nation as well.
If you like Jim Butcher’s the Dresden Files and shows such as The X Files and Supernatural, then this dynamic pair is just for you!

Smoke Rising
Format: audiobook
Narrator: Holly Adams
This is a new to me author the bulb sounded interesting so I thought I give it a try.
I took to Smoke’s character straight away, I feel like there’s something about him that we’ve not yet seen? A bit of mystery which makes him more appealing and makes me want to know more about him.
I have to say I found Agent Sidney Shaw’s whole attitude annoying, she’s too busy trying to show she’s in charge that she won’t listen to common sense, in fact she’ll do the opposite, it’s childish and not the professional FBI agent she’s supposed to be, I hope that she chills a bit as the series continues because I really enjoyed the storyline. I will say though that the punches and weapon firing sounds just sounded silly.
It has a bit of a Mulder & Scully vibe as it ventures into the supernatural.
The narrator has a pleasant voice, easy to listen to and does a good job in the delivery of the story.

Sarcasm and Sass
I liked this book just for the sarcasm and sass from Sid! She has a love/hate relationship with Smoke right from the beginning.
Will definitely be listening to the rest.
Holly Adams is a great narrator - she gets the sarcasm down to a tee lol

Good 1st book
Interesting and entertaining story. The characters are likable. Plenty of action and twists to keep my wayward attention. The narrator did a great job too but I had to speed up the book to 1.3x so that the sentences were up to speed with the intensity that I read. I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Nothing to write home about
The book wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. The main character is a female FBI agent who is teamed up with a bounty hunter/ convict/ anti-hero. They have to try to capture a person who turns out to be a lot more dangerous than what he seems to be.
As I said, nothing wrong with the book but a bit formulaic and without much character development. An easy, undemanding book.

I loved to story!
I lived this story and the way it's written. I love the way things are described.
I'm looking forward to reading/listening to the other 10books!
I'm hoping Smoke and Sid fall for each other... As it already seems they are 😊

Thoroughly Enjoyable
Looking forward to hearing more of this series. Started listening while working in the garden, and finished it the same day. A thoroughly enjoyable story from start to finish.

Poor
This is a poorly written book. The main female character is clearly written to entice the male audience, and scenes within the book are incredibly ick. If a book is going to romanticise sexual assault, I don't want to read it. It wasn't even necessary for the plot.
