Summary
It is 1884, and when a fellow landlady finds her lodger poisoned, Mrs. Hudson turns to Sherlock Holmes.
The police suspect the landlady of murder, but Mrs. Hudson insists that her friend is innocent. Upon investigating, the companions discover that the lodger, a civil servant recently returned from India, was living in almost complete seclusion, and that his last act was to scrawl a mysterious message on a scrap of paper.
The riddles pile up as aged big game hunter Allan Quatermain is spotted at the scene of the crime when Holmes and Watson investigate. The famous man of mind and the legendary man of action will make an unlikely team in a case of corruption, revenge, and what can only be described as magic …

This author does the best of the Holmes covers.
Another enjoyable outing with Holmes and Watson. I really enjoy this narrator too. I think the mispronounciations commented upon by others are deliberate. His style seems to me to be in keeping with the period.

Enjoyable- Always love the Sherlock Holmes world this author creates
I’ve listened to all this author’s free audible books multiple times and really enjoy the Holmes world he creates. I thought it was about time I paid for one! I’ve read quite a few extensions of the canon Sherlock Holmes by various people, and this author definitely does it best. New stories with the original spirit captured, but brought to modern day (for instance the words used around race). This isn’t my fave of his stories, but all very enjoyable- I’ve listened to it twice and I only downloaded it a few days ago.

Very good SH story
Really enjoy all JL Sherlock stories, this one included. Very engaging from beginning to end, and list of depth to the tale and the characters.
If I have a problem it is the same one I often have with authors (and their editors), forgetting that less is more. So much could have been cut - essentially dead flesh - and a great tale remain. But why use ten words when you can use four hundred!! Too much exposition the essential problem. The rats and pigeons assault and the endless conversations pursuing it, became a lecture in how not to keep the pace of the story going. But overall excellent.
Well narrated, too, despite the most bizarre pronunciations of some fairly familiar words. Here are just a few:

Another excellent addition to the Holmes canon by Lovegeove
***Spoiler alert*** This is a generally a great Sherlock story by an author who has written several worthy Sherlock Holmes novels, and for me stands out as the author who has best embraced the lore, whilst putting his own slant on proceedings. Big fan of the Lovecraftian crossover novels. For the most part this story is enjoyable, but around 3/4s of the way through I became a little confused and lost by the decision to use a past life device mechanism to provide assistance to the investigation. It's a plot device that didn't really resonate with me, although in the context of some of the subject matter, it wasn't wholly out of place. Don't be put off. For fans of his writings on the subject, overall a well crafted piece of entertainment.

A great addition to the series
Coming from the more supernatural stories in the series, this felt more grounded in reality and the crossover with another character’s lore was an interesting direction. The story and style fits well with the Holmes universe.

Interesting from beginning to end
Great story and characters. It kept my interest the whole time and now I want to read more of Quartermain and Mnslobogas. Only slightly niggle were some strange pronunciations for example soot. Overall though highly recommended.

A great tale
Again, James Lovegrove mixes genres and characters from elsewhere (in this case H Rider Haggard’s protagonist in his books) to great effect.
A story that travels along at pace, with the usual side stories and winding roads before reaching a rather bloodthirsty denouement.
One thing noticeable in Lovegrove’s SH novels is how he is so well read in other areas that he relates his novels to. Here he is very well acquainted with the backstories of Allan Quartermain and his sidekick Umslopogaas that they and SH/JW fit into each others worlds perfectly.
As always, Denis Kleinman never fails with his excellent narration of Holmes and Watson.

Entertaining but not really the usual Sherlock
Sherlock seems to be a secondary actor, and he doesn’t participate that much with his great deductions and case resolution. Maybe more similar to the side, context stories like that in the Sign of Four.
