Summary

In this important sequel to Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, author Lindsay Gibson offers powerful tools to help you step back and protect yourself at the first sign of an emotional takeover, make sure your emotions and needs are respected, and break free from the coercive control of emotionally immature parents.

Growing up with emotionally immature (EI) parents can leave you feeling lonely and neglected. You may have trouble setting limits and expressing your feelings. And you may even be more susceptible to other emotionally immature people as you establish adult relationships. In addition, as your parents become older, they may still treat your emotions with mockery and contempt, be dismissive and discounting of your reality, and try to control and diminish your sense of emotional autonomy and freedom of thought. In short, EIs can be self-absorbed, inconsistent, and contradictory. So, how can you recover from their toxic behavior?

Drawing on the success of her popular self-help book, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, author Lindsay Gibson offers yet another essential resource. With this follow-up guide, you’ll learn practical skills to help you recognize the signs of an EI, protect yourself against an emotional takeover, reconnect with your own emotions and needs, and gain emotional autonomy in all your relationships. This is a how-to book, with doable exercises and active tips and suggestions for what to say and do to increase emotional autonomy and self-awareness.

If you’re ready to stop putting your own needs last, clear the clutter of self-doubt, and move beyond the fear of judgment and punishment that’s been instilled in you by emotionally immature parents, this book will help you find the freedom to finally live your life your way.

Amazing insightful read. Hugely accurate.

This book has been so helpful. My mum (well both parents) pulled out virtually all of the techniques detailed throughout the book. It has had a massive impact on my life. My mum passed away quite a while ago, but it’s a journey of processing it all (even more so now she’s no longer around adding to the experience). I think this book should be given out routinely in any therapy session where parent issues arises. I cannot rate it more highly.

eye opener

Loved it, now I need to listen again and go through each exercise in more detail.
Sad to say at my age I feel frightened to raise with my own parents step over boundaries but this book has given me the tools to deal with them in a mature and respectful way. Something I was never taught, as my feelings were "over reaction" and imagined.
I am in danger of becoming the EI parent but I'm here to stop the cycle

Wish I’d read this at 18

I have read so many self help books over the years. This one is the most practical and most empowering if you’ve always felt insecure and uncomfortable around your parents but never understood why.

I wish the PDFs and exercises mentioned were included to download as I couldn’t find them anywhere else other than by buying a hard copy of this very helpful and therapeutic audio book

Some good information over all

Not what I expected but had some valuable information. Well read. I thought it would have some information about overcoming physical and emotional trauma from an EIP. This book is more about dealing with current EIP's (emotionally Immature Parents) on a verbal side. She had a lot of advice about building self-worth towards the last two hours of the book.

Validation at its best

Personally the first time I have felt such validation for a seemingly text book child hood that left me unequipped. Some great tips and ways to navigate and learn about responding to others.

Very good in self discovery but not trauma.

This was actually similar to her excellent last book in the first half with practical advice in the second. However if you feel you have trauma from abuse then see a counsellor too.
