What a gripping tale.

I have never come across Stephen Leather's books before, but if this is indicative of the standard of his stories, I will be looking for more in the future. I was so gripped by the tension of Jack Nightingale being surrounded by death and mayhem as he tries to find out the truth about his birth and the fate that awaits him on his 33rd birthday that I stayed awake half the night listening, because I just had to know what happened next. It is a long book, but my attention never wavered, which is rare. I recommend this as a jolly good 'read' to anyone who enjoys thrillers. A beautiful reading job by Paul Thornley, whose voice was perfect for the character, was the icing on the cake.

Very different

An unusual storyline, supernatural but down to earth due to the brilliant narration of Paul Thornley.
Jack Nightingale's birthday is approaching, but he receives the unwelcome news that his soul has been traded and will be given up when he reaches his 33rd birthday. Various people repeat 'You're going to hell Jack Nightingale' and he has a race against time to find out what it's all about and save himself. Very different, looking forward to the next book.

unusual but great book

I did enjoy this book. Not a subject I would normally read. it was a bit of a page turner in the audio sense. The ending was very good but had a slightly unfinished feel to it right at the last sentence. I wanted to hear more. The narrator was perfect. A voice I could listen to forever. I will be looking for other books he has narrated. And other books by this author.

Just great!

My first 5 star all round review. Shades of Rosemary's Baby and The Omen. normally I only listen to audible when on road trips or fishing, this one I just couldnt leave until finished. Can't wait for the next. Even the annoying Paul "he said; she said" Thornley seemed tolerable.

A Gripping Urban fantasy

A gripping story, the main character Jack Nightingale was believable. I loved the way he tried really hard to maintain his 'unbelief' of what was going on around him. The author made you feel that the events could happen to anyone...even you!

Can't fault it

Great story, good balance of fantasy and reality, well developed characters, plot that keeps you hooked, humorous, a few gory parts and excellently (and flawlessly) narrated. I'll be listening to this again soon.

Where's The Magic?

This is an interesting story. I enjoyed it. I would be continuing with the series. BUT, there is almost NOTHING SUPERNATURAL happening in this book. It is 99% a private investigator going around and asking questions and thinking about the answers.

I signed up to read urban fantasy! I want supernatural stuff to happen! I want magic, and spirits, and gods, and fae! Almost nothing supernatural happens until the LAST 45mins!
So, if you're looking for something like Harry Dresden, or Jane Yellowrock, or October Daye, or Mercy Thompson, or Peter Grant, where they actually casually throw magic around, this aint it. I did enjoy this book though, but I would have liked more magic.

Very good, except for.........

I really enjoyed this book. The story takes unexpected twists and turns. Different strands are brought together well at the end, ready for the next instalment. The narration is great.

I found only one real MAJOR bugbear & that was over the lead character’s unrelenting smoking of roll up cigarettes. It felt as if every paragraph began and ended with ‘he lit a cigarette’, or ‘he ground the cigarette butt under his heel’. I accept that some people smoke and that incorporating this into a novel can add atmosphere. However, I did get sick and tired of a fag being lit up or stubbed out on the floor with monotonous regularity. I carried on listening because the underlying story was worth listening too. Just be prepared if you detest the habit.
