Summary
Raw, candid and hilarious, Ellie Taylor's My Child and Other Mistakes is the funny truth about motherhood and all its grisly delights.
My Child and Other Mistakes is the honest lowdown on motherhood and all its grisly delights, asking the questions no one wants to admit to asking themselves - do I want a child? Do I have a favourite? Do I wish I hadn't had one and spent the money on a kitchen island instead?
Stand-up comic, broadcaster and actress Ellie Taylor is relatable, clever and interested in how women can have it all. Her honest, hilarious and moving account of the whys and hows of having a baby makes perfect listening for expectant mothers and fathers everywhere, as well as those who've been there, done that, and wonder how on earth they did.
In this very funny book, she writes candidly about her own personal experience exploring the decision to have a baby when she doesn't even like them, the importance of cheese during pregnancy, why she took hair straighteners to the labour ward, plus the apocalyptic newborn days, childcare, work and the inevitable impact on life and love and, most importantly, her breasts.

The last chapter ..
Beautiful and funny.
I had a tricky start to motherhood, traumatic birth and lost my mum a week later. I remember days and nights being overwhelmed and grieving. This book would have helped to have read in those early days, thanks for your honesty Ellie.
Also I totally relate to wanting to wear your child’s head like a noisy fascinator! Haaaa I would happily wear my chatty boy around, he’s the funniest guy. X

I am obsessed with this book!
Ellie voiced thoughts and feelings I have had but felt too ashamed to say out loud. As cliché as it is: listening to her account I laughed and I cried. I've told every new. and expectant mums I know to listen to it. It's so refreshing and comforting to hear such an honest and accurate account of pregnancy and parenthood. Thank you for writing this

Wonderfully honest
Yes, I have a 3 year old and 5 month old so this book is very much aimed at me. But god I loved it. I laughed and I sobbed. I've read/listened to my share of "mum books" and never has anyone described the newborns stage so honestly. It's so so hard. Your life is ruined. But it does get better. And is 100% worth it. It's so nice to know that I wasn't the only one feeling those feelings. Thanks Ellie x

thanks for the mammaries
absolutely loved this book and was wonderfuly narrated even managed to say areola correctly which is a challenge in itself. totally relatable it's nice to know I'm not the only parent dealing with shituations (my child decided it would be fun to shove a toy car in his poop.all in a days work hey). brilliantly written and a great insight into parenting definitely the sort of book you need to read before you have a darling ratbag of your own.

Hilarious and heart wrenching stuff
I’ve loved Ellie for years and this book has had me laughing, crying and everything in between on the way back from nursery runs every day. It’s the book I wish I’d had when I was feeling like a lonely failure with a newborn in a pandemic.

Excellent performance
I didn’t know Ellie until I saw this book in Audible bestsellers and I had a credit to spare. Despite of not having children or not even ever being pregnant, I somehow was drawn to it and decided to give it a go. And oh God, that was the best mistake I have ever made (bookwise)! I found this book relatable and very funny! I am a very slow reader (and listener) but I just couldn’t stop listening to it and finished the book in 4 days (it hasn’t happened since I was in secondary school). As Ellie says herself, she is fully aware of the fact that her experience is of more privilidged women (supportive partner, family, generally healthy, has a job etc.) and I would add to that it is UK based. Regardless, even if you think it won’t be relatable to you, I still recommend it for Ellie’s audio performance (note for non natives - she speaks very fast). I loved it so much that I consider listening to it again and I do really hope Ellie will write a sequel with her current experience as a mother of a toddler and juggling that with her work and other relationships.

Real, honest and hilarious - brilliant
Fantastic account of life before, during and after the momentous decision to bring a child into the world. Brilliant observational comedy mixed with raw life experience. The book puts you in the shoes of a new mum, with all the reality, tears, love and laughter that brings.
