Summary

Downton Abbey meets Agatha Christie with a touch of Wodehouse and a dog of distinction.

It's 1920, and Christmas is coming.

Major Lennox finds a body on his doorstep - why on his doorstep? Was it to do with the Countess? Was it about the ruby necklace? Lennox goes to Melrose Court, home to his uncle, Lord Melrose, to uncover the mystery. But then, the murders begin, and it snows, and it all becomes very complicated.

Major Heathcliff Lennox, ex-WW1 war pilot, six feet 3 inches, tousled, dark blond hair, age around 30 - named after the hero of Wuthering Heights by his romantically minded mother - much to his great annoyance. Murder at Melrose Court is the first book in the Lennox series.

Light relief

Not to be taken seriously! A kind of ‘midsummer murders’ with butlers, uncles, foreign aristocrats and a dog. Passes the time.

Enjoyable narrative excellent narrator

I've now enjoyed three of the books in this series. The narrator of these books is outstanding for this genre. The best I've heard in several murder mystery series. I hope that Sam Dewhurst-Phillips is engaged to narrate the rest of Karen Baugh's books and many others. Very talented.

Karen Baugh has an ability to develop memorable characters with interactions that provide greater depth than many "cosy" murder mystery characters. There is humour and humanity, gentle psychological mindedness and a love of pets! Unfortunately many of the recent books I've tried have sound very flat with no depth to the characters. I've been relying on finding various series of audible murder mystery books for relaxation, expecially at night as my my work is intense and stressful, so I look for a contrast in my reading. Nothing too intense that will keep me awake, but depth to the characters so that they hold your focus and feel like "welcome friends", which Karen Baugh has pulled off very well. She is clearly developing the characters as the books progress and it leaves one very much wanting to find out what happens next. A sense of humour is interwoved into the narrative and the different locations add colour. I would place these books somewhere between the Max Tudor Murder mystery series (G.M Malliet) and the Joe Sandilands (Barbara Cleverly). Not quite as "cosy" as the Tudor books, but not as serious as the Sandiland's books. For a more intense at times darker series I would recommend Nicola Upton's Josephine Tey mystery books. I do sometimes wish it was easier to find good historic murder mystery books on audible.

Very amusing!

I really enjoyed this, it’s nice to have a lead man whose grumpy and gets annoyed by things and the dog was the icing on the cake!

A true cosy mystery with excellent butlers and lashings of upper class silliness, jewels Russians and snow at Christmas! Lovely

Cosy detective story

A nostalgic setting of the 1920s Cotswolds when winters had snow and Chelsea tractors were not a thing. The country house settings together with vivid descriptions of hearty food add to the atmosphere. The story is enchantingly narrated in a radio drama style completes the enjoyment. The plot is clever and doesn’t drag. I have read the whole series and this Audible version brings the books to life. Curl up, snuggle down and enjoy the escapism.
