Summary
The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct and the half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind, but the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory.
Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. Mutated by radiation, they are better adapted to the new world. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on earth, living in the Moscow Metro - the biggest air-raid shelter ever built. Stations have become mini-statelets, their people uniting around ideas, religions, water-filters, or the need to repulse enemy incursion.
VDNKh is the northernmost inhabited station on its line, one of the Metro's best stations and secure. But a new and terrible threat has appeared. Artyom, a young man living in VDNKh, is given the task of penetrating to the heart of the Metro to alert everyone to the danger and to get help. He holds the future of his station in his hands, the whole Metro - and maybe the whole of humanity.

Adventure and uncertainties at every turn
Well written and narrated story, I was hooked from the 1st to the last word, total suspense and not over played on the mystery, with a huge unexpected twist at the end, defiantly worth the listen again and again.

Much more interesting than I thought
An excellent performance by Rupert Degas. Easy to use one Russian accent, but to do a whole cast takes real talent.
I thought this book would be miserable post apocalyptic, living in brutal holes. But there is real, if dark, magic at work. The survivors of some unexplained catastrophe not only exist but have formed a civilisation in the miles of tunnels beneath Moscow.
The tale is your typical journey fantasy. But brought to life by the writing and realistic characters. I am sorry I avoided this book previously. It is clear why there are fans who blog about this world and create detailed maps of the Metro.

Enjoyed it
Enjoyed it but the ending didn't make sense to me . New specie which evolved from humans has very inconsistent behaviour.

interesting take on the end of the world
I really enjoyed them premise of this story. the narrative alis fantastic the characters are really well thought out and the metro came alive in my mind with the stations and people he met along the way. I just found by 75% the way through I began to lose interest and the ending was rather dull 😑

Horror and action, what's not to love?
Its like if Stephen King wrote an Aliens movie.
Can sometimes get a bit heavy in the details, but overall it's a great and original story.

Excellent Narration of a Fascinating Story
The narration was superb, with each character given their own distinct and consistent voice. The worm priest’s vocalisation in particular made me want to applaud Rupert Degas.
The story follows the post apocalyptic journey of our hero through the metro tunnels, stations and overland of Moscow in order, in his mind, to right a wrong of his youth. He meets and interacts with rangers, philosophers, fascists, religious fanatics, madmen, mutated beings, hungry psychic goo and more in an adventure with a most unexpected and tragic denouement.
The story made me pause many times to Google images of Moscow, the Kremlin and the Moscow Metro all of which are now on my bucket list to visit before loose fingers press shiny red buttons.
I’m now keen to see where the sequels take me!
