Summary
The second book in Andrew Hastie's imaginative and original Infinity Engines series, Maelstrom is an action-packed dystopian, time travel adventure.
Caitlin has disappeared and someone has changed history. Lost in an alternate reality, Josh must discover who has disrupted the timeline and try to fix the continuum.
But there's a problem. The Order has become divided over an old manuscript which describes the Maelstrom—a chaotic realm filled with ancient gods that exists outside of the timestream. One faction believes that Josh will be the key to unlocking its power, the other that he needs to die to save them from oblivion.
Josh must find Caitlin and a way into the maelstrom, discover the author of the book and rewrite the prophecy.

One of those books you just can’t put down
Pure fantasy and pure time travel. With everything in between. Again lots of historical interest, danger, action, romance. I can’t wait for the next one.

Excellent narration
The story is fine, a different take on many others involving youngsters with special abilities, but along with a decent plot, the narrator is what makes me stay. Brilliant voices, perfectly paced.
Part three downloading as we speak (type…read…)

Great fun
With overtones of the terminator, matrix and Harry potter, with a touch of HG Wells. It's a wonderful tapestry of sci fantasy. I almost did not want my commute to come to an end as I wanted to keep listening. Nothing ground breaking but the pacing was great the story kept me ingrosed and the characters are well developed. Hastie has become a fantasy author who like Jacka and Aaronovitch I will look forward to reading in the future.

Loving this instalment
Just complex enough to make me wonder what’s going to happen next. And not too complex to lose me.

Narration and Narrative
I was gripped from the start. the story has strong lines but requires full attention to keep up with the detail. the outstanding narrator made the book for me.

It’s a good read however…
I loved the first book so naturally I jumped on to this one. I’m a big fan of the narrator already (please see The Name of the Wind) this book was fun but I felt it moved so fast and shifted so rapidly that if you stop paying attention for a mere 15 seconds, you’ll find you have absolutely no idea what’s going on and who certain characters are. It feels like an abridged version and maybe it is and I’ve missed that small print. I think every time they are in “peril” it’s always such a simple escape. Arrested? No problem.. just easily escape or have a 5 second conversation to talk your way out of a bad spot. The author keeps changing people’s agendas every 2.3 seconds and after a while you sort of just stop caring or are not surprised when it’s not obvious that you’re no longer in one century but a completely different one. This book isn’t so much about time travel, more a theme park where you are on one ride but wait… you’re on a different ride and it’s so fast that you didn’t notice when the characters got off and were making friends with the tea cups. I’ll give the third book a go for sure but if it starts to become a whirlwind of worsening plots then I’ll give up. I just wish the author would stick to a narrative.
