Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The Stranger Times - winner of the 2023 British Fantasy Award for Best Audio Work!

Love can be a truly terrible thing.

Marriages are tricky at the best of times, especially when one of you is dead.

Vincent Banecroft, the irascible editor of The Stranger Times, has never believed his wife died despite emphatic evidence to the contrary. Now, against all odds, it seems he may actually be proved right; but what lengths will he go to in an attempt to rescue her?

With Banecroft distracted, the shock resignation of assistant editor, Hannah Willis, couldn't have come at a worse time. It speaks volumes that her decision to reconcile with her philandering ex-husband is only marginally less surprising than Banecroft and his wife getting back together. In this time of crisis, is her decision to swan off to a fancy new-age retreat run by a celebrity cult really the best thing for anyone?

As if that wasn't enough, one of the paper's ex-columnists has disappeared, a particularly impressive trick seeing as he never existed in the first place.

Floating statues, hijacked ghosts, homicidal cherubs, irate starlings, Reliant Robins and quite possibly several deeply sinister conspiracies; all-in-all, a typical week for the staff of The Stranger Times.

Just… so good!

I do love this series, the characters are growing, the world is building and filling out, I’m so looking forward to the next one (please let there be another one… or ten)

oh, and Brendan McDonald, stunning narrator.

Just so good.

Brilliant!

I devoured all 3 of these in a couple of weeks. Narration is fantastic and hilarious. The world and character building have been well paced so far, as well as entertaining. The author's style of writing and wit is comparable to Sir Terry Pratchett and I hope this series continues for many years!

Continually fantastic

This series is just fantastic. The writing is funny, fast-paced and captivating with a broad spectrum of really fun characters.

The performance by Brendan McDonald is superb (although the Irish pronunciation of "column" is a little jarring, it still works). Every character pops.

Can't really recommend the series highly enough.

Stunning

One of the best audiobooks I have listened to in a long time. Great narration. Great story. Humorous , frightening, touching, and all told at a gallop. I’m hooked.

Excellent off beat stories

Captured the Manchester attitude really well. I do like laconic humour and Mcdonald does it with panache.
This series deserves to run and run

Brilliant, fun and wonderfully performed.

There is a special joy in finding an audiobook that is wonderfully written and narrated. This book brings joy. I have the hard back book too and it is a thing of beauty but the audiobook is a joy forever.

Wonderfully silly

If you are looking for a serious and impressive book, about big worthy subjects, this isn’t it.
I personally love a crime novels, this is a sort of a crime novel, it does talk about big subjects in it’s own way but it is mostly about journalists reporting on crime with ghosts and monsters and magic and such.
There are some funny and unusual characters.
My favourite is the God fearing receptionist,
It’s mostly light hearted with dark undertones.
Great narration, what’s not to like.

Another fantastic listen

Fantastic writing, absolutely outstanding narration by Brendan McDonald. I marvel every time I listen to him and how he can jump between the many characters accents.
Can't wait for the next book in the series.
