Summary

The second book in the DI Eva Harris series, this is a gripping, multi-layered thriller that will keep listeners on the edge of their seats.

In an abandoned warehouse, a schoolboy makes a grisly discovery: 96 containers, each filled with exquisitely preserved bodily remains.

Detective Eva Harris knows the line between life and death better than most. Having survived a near fatal encounter with the criminal underworld once before, she is still haunted by the repercussions of her actions - and fearful of the whole truth emerging.

Faced with the crime scene, she is forced to contemplate a difficult question: is this the work of a lone psychopath - or is there a more complicated truth hidden in this killer’s art?

Her search for the killer takes her across Europe, from the upper echelons of society’s glittering elite to the dark and tangled web of the underworld - and finally, to the very limits of humanity.

Enjoyed the half I listened to

I started listening to this book after it came up as part of my “included in membership” listens. I was enjoying it and was half way through when I was suddenly locked out and would have had to pay to listen to the second half.

This was literally from one day to the next, I took no break in listening. I listened to half of it on headphones while stripping out a bathroom and tried to listen again the next day but couldn’t.

Audible should warn you when they’re going to suddenly disallow you to continue. I wouldn’t have started it if I’d known if not be able to finish. So incredibly dishonest of them!!

Not good

The narrative is so flat and monotone, holds no emotion , I can’t listen to it anymore, I gave it a good try but thumbs down for this one.

Far better than negative reviews suggested

I was hooked just listening to the sample and was not disappointed. Personally, I prefer books read straight instead of a narrator attempting to 'act' different accents and characters voices and I particularly liked Louise Brealey's style. Haven't read 20/20 yet but I certainly will now and hope the series continues. Wish I could message RDC because I had a similar problem; the book became UNAVAILABLE when I tried to continue listening on the second day. However, I contacted Audible Help Desk and they showed me how to 'reboot' the app which restored it, thank goodness.

Lifesign

I really tried to listen to this but gave up after 4 hours, it was tedious, not enough suspense or mystery for me, the narrator was ok a little flat toned at times. If you like long explanations about technical jargon etc. (I have enough of that IRL) then this book should appeal. The writing was very good it just did not grip me at all.

Outstanding

This is the sequel to 20/20 which I very much enjoyed, this book may actually surpass it's predecessor for ingenuity but I'd have to revisit 20/20 to be certain of that.

Its not for the faint hearted, so avoid if you don't care for violent fiction, but grab it now if you enjoy high tension crime thrillers.

I have to add that I love Louise Brealey's narration, she is clearly not to everyones taste judging by some of the reviews, but a quick listen to the sample should fix that issue, if you don't like what you hear, don't buy.

Good plot

Good plot but I struggled with the narrator. I understood the strong main character but this seemed to come across as almost bored at times.

Not my cup of tea!

Firstly the Narrator didn't seem to give the story any life.
The book itself seemed overly complicated for such a boring tale.
I made it to Chapter 7 before deciding I'm not going to get the wasted time back this lifetime.
However the book would serve you well if you suffered with insomnia.

Struggled through waiting for reward -for listening to what seemed endless descriptions and science jargon. Bit of a damp squib

Really enjoyed the first book. i got used to the narration , adds a bit to the hard core lead character.i felt it was a bit disjointed...author wants to keep the Rasen thread alive but only dips in every now and then without developing that storyline much. mason subject got dragged out a bit with endless jargon.
lots of good bits but i couldn't keep the momentum up to concentratr on it and was happy for large sections of storyline to drift past me.
happy it was free. but don't think I'll rush back to the next installment which is obviously coming as this book just put the foundations in

Great book

I found this book exciting. It was well written with a great storyline and thankfully not just another rehashed cop story. The narration was very good too, and suited the characters well.
I listened to and enjoyed 20/20 and recommend that is read first to understand the references to that storyline in this book. I do hope there’s another book to follow this one. Definitely recommend this book.
