Summary
#1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • “A landmark manifesto" (The New York Times) that's a revelatory, inspiring call to action and a blueprint for individual growth that will empower women around the world to achieve their full potential.
In her famed TED talk, Sheryl Sandberg described how women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers. Her talk, which has been viewed more than eleven million times, encouraged women to “sit at the table,” seek challenges, take risks, and pursue their goals with gusto. Lean In continues that conversation, combining personal anecdotes, hard data, and compelling research to change the conversation from what women can’t do to what they can. Sandberg, COO of Meta (previously called Facebook) from 2008-2022, provides practical advice on negotiation techniques, mentorship, and building a satisfying career. She describes specific steps women can take to combine professional achievement with personal fulfillment, and demonstrates how men can benefit by supporting women both in the workplace and at home.
Critic reviews
“Lean In is an inauguration more than a last word, and an occasion for celebration ... Many, many women, young and old, elite and otherwise, will find it prescriptive, refreshing, and perhaps even revolutionary.” (Anna Holmes, The New Yorker)
“A landmark manifesto ... Fifty years after The Feminine Mystique ... Sandberg addresses 21st-century issues that never entered Betty Friedan’s wildest dreams ... Lean In will be an influential book. It will open the eyes of women who grew up thinking that feminism was ancient history, who recoil at the word but walk heedlessly through the doors it opened. And it will encourage those women to persevere in their professional lives.” (Janet Maslin, The New York Times)
“I approached it wearing two hats—one as CEO [and] the other as the parent of a nine-year-old daughter. In both capacities, I feel that Lean In is a must read.” (Mohamed El-Erian, CEO of PIMCO, in Fortune)

Sit at the Table
I loved it! I now sit at the table confidently and keep encouraging more women to do same, no matter how young. Thank you Sheryl.

Great Listen
This was an amazing listen. I made several notes and also will be going back to listen again. I recommend. At the end of the day, none of the things we read are imperative for us to do or follow, but they help to provide advice and give insights. It can also be the push you need when you are living within the confines of your comfort zone. Hearing someone you do not know re-affirming something you know should be doing, but are not, due to whatever the constraint (fear, insecurity, rejection) can be all the push you need.

Fantastic book
I love all the personal anecdotes combined with reputable research and stats which makes us realize just how problematic gender equality is not, even in 2021.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who believes in meritocracy and making our societies better and more prosperous.

Great story and Great narrator
I loved the story and the insights of it. I couldn't stop listening. I found myself looking for every single person she named in the book. I am very grateful for Sheryl Sandberg sharing her perspective.
The narrator adjusted very well to the sentiment of the words!
I would definitely recommend it!

Essential reading for both men and women
Whilst I understand Lean In is mainly directed towards women, it’s critical that men also understand these issues and play their part in mentoring, creating environments and work policies that encourage hiring of women (ie family friendly policies) etc. Some of the advice is obvious but there were some other useful practical insights from a mother with a career. As a two-career-two-kid couple some of the parenting considerations were especially useful and reassuring.

Inspiring, wise with sense of humour. Wonderful.
Wise, successful woman, who is not afraid to speak out, about what we all feel and experience as women. She delivers the message without patronising or criticising other women. Instead she shares her experiences, insecurities imposed by herself and others (that most women I know, can relate to). At the same time she focuses on solutions to the problems, points the way forward.
I found this book uplifting, inspiring, educational and well written. Serious matters delivered with reflections and sense of humor.

a book to recommend to everyone I meet
I love this book. I don't really have the struggle with the family and children, but I relate because people assume that I have that struggle.
My new years resolution is right out of this book "what would you do if you were not afraid?"
this book is funny, brilliant, and I'm buying copies and giving them out like candy.
Everyone should read this book!

Why Have I Not Read This Before?!
Have known about this book for years. So glad I have read it now but wish I had earlier. An important book which explains so much of what a female endures, with explanations of why and with tips on how to overcome. Good for you Sheryl for sharing your story, and the encouragement, and thank you. Recommended for both genders.

Love this!
I listened to this audiobook after watching Sheryl Sandberg on YouTube during doing some research on women in Leadership. This is a truly inspirational book and I will be recommending it to all my women in Leadership members to help them to lean in!
