Summary

Last Bus to Woodstock is the novel that began Colin Dexter's phenomenally successful Inspector Morse series.

'Do you think I'm wasting your time, Lewis?'

Lewis was nobody's fool and was a man of some honesty and integrity.

'Yes, sir.'

An engaging smile crept across Morse's mouth. He thought they could get on well together....

The death of Sylvia Kaye figured dramatically in Thursday afternoon's edition of the Oxford Mail. By Friday evening Inspector Morse had informed the nation that the police were looking for a dangerous man - facing charges of willful murder, sexual assault and rape.

But as the obvious leads fade into twilight and darkness, Morse becomes more and more convinced that passion holds the key....

Last Bus to Woodstock is followed by the second Inspector Morse book, Last Seen Wearing.

Beautifully read

At last I’ve found a series I can listen to. Sam West is a tremendous reader and makes listening a delight.
Whilst Colin Dexter’s writing hasn’t aged well societally, the plot twists stand the test of time.
As a Morse, Lewis and especially Endeavour fan, I relished listening and visualising the story. Reserved for night time, episodes segued in to the day so I’m now already into the second book. This is going to get expensive!

Morse

I really don't like Colin Dexter's writing. at times it sounds so sexist. The character of Morse in the books is pretty unlikeable. Sam West is a really good narrator. Good plots but too depressing. Morse is a bit of a creep in the books.

Excellent reading

Really well read, such a good listen. I gave the story 4* because there are a couple of things I didn’t think credible, and one part was a bit contrived and over-long.
Don’t expect the book to be exactly the same as the TV story – remember, though, the book came first!
It’s of its time, as are the works of, say, Shakespeare and Dickens; experiences and attitudes reflect those of the era, as they are bound to do. I don’t subscribe to the view that everything should be rewritten in case a few people are offended (as has been suggested in one of the reviews) – just write different stories!
I really enjoyed it and will definitely listen again at some point.

Not aged well

I am a great admirer of Samuel West as narrator, and of the TV Morse. But the book itself hasn't aged well. Morse comes across as a priapic dinosaur, nor redeemed by any indication that his views are not those of the author. I will try another, but will probably go back to watching Morse rather than reading/listening to the books.

Perfect narration

Hurrah! At last narrator who reads intelligently and doesn’t put on silly voices for different characters
