Summary

Written in 1593, King Richard III is one of Shakespeare's earliest plays. This play differs from its predecessors, being amore structured piece, examining the development and motivations of a single character, Richard Duke of Gloucester, who will stop at nothing to gain control of the throne occupied by his brother Edward IV.

Richard III is a self-motivating character who defies determinism (a life preordained by God) and sets his life on a course chosen by his own will and desire, as he puns in the opening soliloquy: "I am determined to be a villain. Determined by birth and God, and determined in the other sense, by his own will."

Fantastic performance

Probably my favourite of all Shakespeare's plays, and a powerful performance of it! The words and the cast are so good that you don't need to "see" the play to understand what is taking place: a wonderful Audible experience.

Excellent performance

This is top notch performances from the actors, really enjoyed it. Refreshing to hear the whole of the play. I thought the queen's were particularly good in their vitriol and seduction. I normally don't like Kenneth Brannagh but he played Richard superbly. Recommended version.

Easy to follow along

What a great cast. The well spoken English makes this easy to understand. For me, it was the first time I'd heard or seen the play.
