Summary

Set in the days of the British Raj, Kipling's finest novel is the exciting and touching tale of an Irish orphan-boy who has lived free in the streets of Lahore before setting out, with a Tibetan Lama, on a spiritual quest. Kim later enrolls in the Indian Service and simultaneously embarks on an espionage mission of supreme importance. A thrilling climax in the Himalayas occurs when the two quests become entangled. Kim's search for identity is staged within one of the most magnificent and affectionate portrayals of Indian culture in literature.

A brilliant reading

The richness of the reading and it's range of voices brings the novel alive. Much better than trying to read it as a book.

Lovely reading of a clasic

The reader carefully separated the voices of each character making the story telling come to life.

Outstanding

A superb reading of a classic book. The story is moving, gripping and profound, the characters are warm and human and all Indian life is represented. I can’t recommend Mashable Sharma highly enough.

Best performance ever

I have another performance of Kim and I have heard others but this is brilliant. Madhav Sharma can slip from British of the Raj to native accents with an ease that is breath taking. So easy that you do not notice after the first time. I highly recommend this recording.

Wonderful characters

I love books about India. Kipling obviously had a marvellous understanding of the spirituality, superstitions and philosophies that surrounded him. It is a dated political outlook because Kipling is writing in a colonial time with colonial opinions and some of the themes are dark. But I understand now why he was so lauded in his day. A book to be sipped gently , something to listen to quietly at the end of a busy day.

Wonderful

A great story, beautifully read - really captures the atmosphere of India at that time (from a contemporary Englishman's view of course). I have listened to it several times and will listen again.

A Classic beautifully told

This story is one of my favourite all time classics and over the years I have collected many versions of it's reading. Of all the versions I have this is by far the best. The pace is perfect, this is a book to savour not rushed and you can certainly do that with this reading. It's not slow but it doesn't race through the tale and cause you to miss the detail.
Madhav Sharma created a full cast with beautifully defined, individual voices for each character. Exactly what you would expect from a quality reading. Bravo!
Basically, if you want to invest the time and listen to a wonderful tale while you savour the magnificent turn of phrase of Kipling then go for this version. I like it so much I have recently retired my original CD version that I've been listening to for years and upgraded to an Audible copy. (the space saving is HUGE!)
If you go for it I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Evocative, mesmerising.

I read someone's critique of this book and I tried to see their point of view as it had been a little negative.
You must remember that this was written over a hundred years ago when the world was a much different place. No political correctness or complexity in the authors eyes, just a romantic view of a lost empire.
I loved this book, I loved the characters, the story and the excellent way in which it stimulates the imagination.
The reader gives it that romantic sense of reality and helps to carry you off to a long lost empire.
I am a very"romantic" person when it comes to imagination, I enjoy, and like to be carried away by the story, and to use my imagination to be in the place with the characters, this book did this fully, and I look forward to finding other books that can do the same.
