Le teste si possono tagliare o contare. Nel 1931 il regime fascista scelse entrambe le soluzioni e impose a tutti i professori universitari un giuramento di fedeltà al duce. Giurarono in 1238. Solo in dodici si rifiutarono. Questo è il racconto di uno di quei dodici, ed è liberamente ispirato alla figura di Mario Carrara, medico legale, uno dei primi a rifiutare il freddo censimento con cui Lombroso aveva insegnato a catalogare gli uomini e le anime. Mentre l’università celebra il concetto della razza, le carriere si fanno con la tessera del partito, gli studenti indossano le camicie nere anche a lezione, Carrara intuisce l’agonia scellerata del Paese e quando il rettore gli comunica data e prescrizioni del giuramento, ossia fedeltà al re e a Mussolini, capisce di non poterlo fare. Non per puntiglio ideologico ma per sentimento di decenza. Perché quel giuramento è anzitutto ridicolo, grottesco, fasullo. In una parola: indecente. La storia di Mario Carrara è metafora involontaria eppure inevitabile su questo nostro tempo, pervaso da nuovi conformismi e da antiche rassegnazioni.
