4 giugno 1944, gli americani entrano a Roma. Elsa de' Giorgi, grande attrice del cinema italiano di quegli anni, di famiglia antifascista e lei stessa antifascista, scende in via Quattro Fontane per porgere a un soldato una bandiera tricolore. La de' Giorgi è di una bellezza sfolgorante, ha appena sposato il nobile Sandrino Contini Bonaccossi ed è corteggiata da tanti. In casa sua passano Carlo Levi e Alberto Moravia, Renato Guttuso e Pietro Nenni. E nei suoi quaderni raccoglie i ritratti di quegli e degli altri uomini dell'antifascismo e della Resistenza romana.
Nel 1955 Einaudi deciderà di pubblicare quelle note. Il libro si chiamerà "I coetanei". Verrà poi insignito con il premio Viareggio. Per la prefazione viene incaricato Gaetano Salvemini, che la de' Giorgi già conosceva. Carlo Levi disegna la copertina. Il libro ha bisogno di editing e per questo viene affidato a Italo Calvino. Tra i due in seguito nascerà una grandissima storia d'amore. Ma questo sarà poi un altro libro...
