Summary
The gritty prison memoir of Michaella McCollum, one half of the infamous 'Peru Two', imprisoned in a Peruvian jail for attempting to smuggle 11kg of cocaine from Peru to Madrid in August 2013.
She was just a regular girl, spending the summer working at a bar in Ibiza, until she was approached by a man who asked her if she'd like to make some quick, easy money...and it would change her life forever. This is the truth of her time in prison, told through her own diaries and letters to her mother, family and friends, recounting tales of vicious guards, psychotic inmates and horrendous prison conditions.
A brilliantly affecting tale of a naïve young girl who starts out in the Ibiza party scene and comes of age in the dark heart of Peru, before finally emerging into the sun a stronger, more confident, mature young woman.
COMING SOON TO BBC THREE - 'HIGH', A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT MICHEALLA'S ARREST, CONVICTION, AND TIME IN A SOUTH AMERICAN PRISON

Interesting Listen
Interesting listen, it's always horrible to hear how people are treated in some foreign prisons and what they have to do to survive. However the only sympathy I had was for the family of Michaella and not Michaella herself and I found on occasions throughout the book, the way it was told or come across was that I was listening to the story of an innocent person who had been wrongly imprisoned, not that of a guilty person who knowingly smuggled drugs. There is only so much you can pity yourself In a situation you put yourself in, knowing the risks and what could happen.

Good book but hated the story and message behind i
Not a fan of the story. Felt like she wasn't accountable at all. Felt like she didn't deserve what she got and that when she came out that everyone was meant to be completely forget her illegal actions. and now she's an influencer.

Great in site on how gullible people are when young
Great story about a gullible girl who was probably set up.- cartels use some mules and set them up so others can get through, and to give the authorities a bust,
Love the ending how she’s went to uni and have kids.

Binge worthy
I enjoyed this overall. I think it's sad a lot of reviewers commented on her self pitying. I think having been a bit of a wild teen once it's very easy to make mistakes and get sucked into the wrong crowd. we forget our own naievity and thirst for adventure sometimes. It was a great insight into a prison in a country I have been blessed enough to visit. I found it very compelling. she was lucky in many ways her experience wasn't worse and she's done really well turning things around.

I guess you either love it or hate it
I loved it. I couldn't stop listening. I had to find out what happened next. I remember the headlines but I didn't closely follow her story at the time. It really is fascinating, though. It seems that a lot of people have no sympathy for Michaella and let that cloud their view of the book.
I agree with other reviewers that there were times when she may have come across as entitled. She was also living better than most of the prisoners because <spoiler alert> she received a lot of food and money. Having said that, after listening to her tell her side of the story I think she is actually likeable. She did go through quite a lot and bettered herself in the process.
I also thought the narrator was very good at both telling the story and doing the accents of others in the book.

Excellent!
I really enjoyed this account of this young woman’s experiences. It is well written, interesting and maintains a pace throughout. I don’t agree with with the reviewers who believe that Michaella comes across as arrogant. Perhaps the comment stems from little attention being given to remorse about her agreeing to transport drugs. She was very young (just 19) at the time of the crime. She certainly appears to have felt guilty at the effect on her family, her mother in particular.

Great listen
I thought this book was a great listen, I didn’t want to stop listening and definitely gave the authors side of the story, yes she was wrong, young and stupid but turned her life around 180 degrees
