Summary

Michael Henchard, drunk at a country fair, sells his wife and baby daughter for five guineas. The following day, in despair and remorse, he forswears alcohol and sets out to redeem himself. In time, he becomes a respected merchant and eventually the mayor of the town. But Fate is not to be so easily appeased, and Henchard finds his past actions resonate through and destroy his plans for the future.

One of the greatest novels in the English language, The Mayor of Casterbridge sees Thomas Hardy at his best, bringing landscape and richly imagined characters to life, and setting the hope of love against the forces of Providence.

A Masterclass in Audiobook narration

Anton Lesser managed to navigate Hardy’s arching sentences without ever losing the sense or the forward motion. I was gripped.

Absolutely loved this book and the narration

What made the experience of listening to Hardy: The Mayor of Casterbridge the most enjoyable?

The language and structure of this book is so pleasing and rich, particularly the varied accents. Anton Lesser did a brilliant job with this.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I wanted to savour this, an hour at a time.

A Wonderful novel by Thomas Hardy

The Mayor of Casterbridge.
A Wonderful novel. Anton Lesser brought the story to life with his use of the local accents and dialects. An amazing performance and I was sorry when it ended.

Anton Lesser is Magnificent!

Anton Lesser gives a masterclass in performance so excellent is his narration. He has an unbelievable ability to give characters individual voices he is a one man theater troupe. However I have problem with Hardy and maybe because I accepted the wisdom when I had to study him at school. Admittedly I always found him gloomy but some of his descriptive passages are engaging and delightfully finely observed.
That said having revisited Hardy after a few decades I am seeing it anew. The plotting in this and other works of his is his Achilles heel and often painfully relies on almost impossible coincidence or drunken servants. Still for Lesser alone well worth a listen.

Give that Narrator an Oscar!

The genius of the narrator matched only by that of the author. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Gripping from beginning to end

This is a sublime narration of a superb novel. I adore all the works of Thomas Hardy but I can honestly say that Anton Lesser truly brings every single character off the page and makes them entirely real. You will not regret downloading this work.
