Editor reviews

The best-selling Gone Girl written by Gillian Flynn and narrated by Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne is an audiobook so affecting it will have you looking at the closest members of your family and wondering how well you really know them at all. Now also a major film starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, this is the story of a missing wife, a distraught husband and a web of lies so thick it engulfs an entire community. You will listen wide-eyed and heart-pounding through the night, desperate to know their fate. This is a thriller of incredible depth. Available now from Audible.

Summary

What are you thinking, Amy? The question I've asked most often during our marriage, if not out loud, if not to the person who could answer. I suppose these questions storm cloud over every marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Who are you? What have we done to each other? What will we do? Just how well can you ever know the person you love?

These are the questions that Nick Dunne must ask himself on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police immediately suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they aren't his. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone.

So what really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife? And what was in that half-wrapped box left so casually on their marital bed? In this novel, marriage truly is the art of war.

Worth waiting

I am a big fan of thrillers. However, after my previous reads ( all by Michael Robotham) I found this story very slow to start. I found it difficult to identify with the characters, but put it down to cultural differences, since they are American and I am Irish. However, as the story unwinds it becomes ever more intriguing. I found myself mentally going through all the possibilities. The characters grew on me as the narratives revealed more about their inner worlds. A good book. Well worth reading. Just be patient enough to get through the first hour.

Engrossing but ultimately frustrating

Very clever and detailed psychological thriller. Don't be fooled by the pace - the devil is in all the detail. The ending is not wrong and was good writing but not really what the average reader wants after hours of listening. So 4 stars. Good for journeys. Not good if you are feeling down - instead, read The Hundred Year Old Man who Climbed out the Window to lift your heart.

Most enjoyable

Really enjoyed this, excellent narration. Lots of graphic swearing.
I couldn't care less but some more sensitive souls might.

Fabulous and intriguing!!!

Very good story telling, believable characters, good narrators. Nicely complicated but not difficult to follow. Simply a great crime novel!

What was that ending?

The story and narration were very good. That plot twist in the middle, it was amazing. But that ending was bloody extremely dissatisfying, I don't know what to say. I am speechless

Slow starter but worth it

I found this to be a bit of a slow starter as in it didn’t hook me from the get go but once it had it was really good with all the twists and turns. I really enjoyed the narrators they made it easy to build up good characters. Sometimes I feel the writing and the narrating can clash making this difficult but not with this it was like a film in my mind and no I haven’t seen the film.
