Summary
Mia Tang has a lot of secrets: 1. She lives in a motel, not a big house. 2. Her parents hide immigrants. 3. She wants to be a writer. It will take all of Mia's courage, kindness, and hard work to get through this year. Will she be able to hold on to her job, help the immigrants and guests, and go for her dreams? Perfect for fans of Boy At the Back of the Class and A Kind of Spark.

Determination is a virtue
I was gripped by the story. A writing talent that obviously began from a young age. As a 2nd generation immigrant myself I love how balsy the main character was. She didn't take no for an answer, tenacious lil thing. Spurs me on, I was reminded not to put myself in a corner. Great story made even better that it's slightly based on real life.

Jarring truths
First of Kelly Yang’s book that I came across. Downloaded it as the blurb says for those who enjoyed A Kind of Spark. Of course by the time I look at my list of audiobooks for my work journey I forgot all about allocating this for family journey.
I really enjoyed it, more than I actually thought I would. It is already an emotive story, full of relevant world issues. However the narration by Sunny Lu just brings the story even more alive too. I looked forward to my work journey because of it. The ending and Kelly Yang’s notes brought tears to my eyes.
Whilst writing this review, I found out that her book was banned in 2021 because it talked about racism, biased-ness and all sorts of prejudices that is happening. I think it can be quite jarring to people who are really unaware of these issues happening around them, however it is important for these to be seen and then only it can be tackled.
I definitely recommend and will put the rest of the series in my TBR!

delightful kid's book
This is a lovely elementary school level book that deals with some of the harsh realities of life as a poor immigrant to the USA in a very kid friendly, uplifting and empowering way. I take my hat off you, author, well done.

Not my usual genre
Picked this as it was free and have been let down by quite a few bad audible purchases recently. A pretty good story and narrated well, worth a listen.
