Summary

A young swordsman must retrieve a magical blade—and learn the truth about his past—in this fantasy adventure set within the Arcane Ascension universe.

A young man lives among the trees of a primeval forest, raised by a wizened old sage and friend to the faeries and spirits of his home. He bears only half a name—Lien, an ancient word meaning "blade" or "edge"—and no knowledge of his heritage. As he grows, so too does his need for independence and answers. Thus, he begins his adventure, seeking a shattered sword and the truth behind the mysterious mark on his right hand.

To earn his freedom from his adoptive grandfather, Lien will seek to complete the trials of Anathema, a long-hidden weapon of devastating power. To succeed, he must master his own burgeoning power, learning swordplay and magic from fractured figments of ancient legends. Though his training will push him to the brink, failure comes at an even greater cost. For only with his talents fully forged will Lien stand a chance against his true foe: destiny itself.

Set within New York Times–bestselling author Andrew Rowe's Arcane Ascension universe, and inspired by Japanese manga and role-playing games, Edge of the Woods is the first volume of an epic new fantasy series perfect for fans of The Legend of Zelda.

Great story, engaging performance and fun fantasy!

I really enjoyed the tale of Edge and his growth, the level up element to the magic system and the fey environment that the story is based in. Also, it's a nice tie in to characters from his other books. Very good book, would recommend!

Andrew Rowe has never written a bad book

This feels very much like an attempt to incorporate “How to defeat a demon king” into his new world which is cool. I can’t wait to read the sequel and see how it fits into the world as a whole

Interesting start not sure the best

Enjoyable listen but found myself losing track at parts as techniques and such described in too much detail. Interesting story though and performance as usual just excellent

A swing a miss by Andrew Rowe

Let me preface this by stating I like Andrew Rowes book a great deal. Arcane Ascension and Weapons and Wielders are both fantastic series, with alot to like.

This first book in a new series, just feels well like Andrew was trying to jam round peg into a square hole. The characters are one dimensional or just easy ways to keep the plot and the main character moving on and stronger quicker.
A book that had very little substance and alot of foreshadowing and build up but didn't give me enjoy enjoyment to want to keep listening.

Don’t waste your money

Despite the fact that the author’s previous books are usually drawn out, presumably with the intention of writing an unfinished cash-cow series, I gave this a go.

The narrator used the same intonation and voices for characters used previously and, whilst the story was, at least, from a different perspective, it was nothing new. Nothing that is, until the author decided to casually include the current, fashionable, gender ideology by way of characters deciding which sex he would be for that year. At the point where the protagonist reminisces over how he helped stitch a child’s first breast binder, I stopped listening.

Firstly, this practice has been proven to be dangerous. Secondly, I’m sick of having this ideology rammed down my throat. Will he espouse the virtues of anorexia next? If the author wishes to hold those values, he’s quite welcome to do so without expecting me to pay to hear them.

I won’t be buying any more of his books, even if he deigns to complete the previous sets.
