Summary
Twenty-five years after her passing, Audrey Hepburn remains the most beloved of all Hollywood stars, known as much for her role as UNICEF ambassador as for films like Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Several biographies have chronicled her stardom, but none has covered her intense experiences through five years of Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. According to her son, Luca Dotti, "The war made my mother who she was."
Audrey Hepburn's war included participation in the Dutch Resistance, working as a doctor's assistant during the "Bridge Too Far" battle of Arnhem, the brutal execution of her uncle, and the ordeal of the Hunger Winter of 1944. She also had to contend with the fact that her father was a Nazi agent and her mother was pro-Nazi for the first two years of the occupation. But the war years also brought triumphs as Audrey became Arnhem's most famous young ballerina.
Audrey's own reminiscences, new interviews with people who knew her in the war, wartime diaries, and research in classified Dutch archives shed light on the riveting, untold story of Audrey Hepburn under fire in World War II.
Also included is a section of color and black-and-white photos. Many of these images are from Audrey's personal collection and are published here for the first time.

Heartfelt and Fascinating
Well recommended for anyone wanting to know more about the beautiful and mysterious Audrey Hepburn. Also a fascinating perspective on true wartime in occupied Netherlands.

A fantastic woman who achieved so much for humanity. An incredible life and sadly cut too short.

Interesting history of an iconic actress
This was a very interesting background about an actress mush beloved for her acting career. She always wanted to be a ballerina but the invasion of Holland put paid to that.
I found the narrator’s voice jarring! However, the history was fascinating enough to continue listening to the end.
I would recommend this book if you can put up with the voice of the narrator.

I hope this is not too embellished
As a fan of Audrey but also a keen amateur military historian (I study the SWW continuously) I throughly enjoyed this account, which appears to me to set out to answer openly questions about AH’s wartime life. It does feel as if some of the experiences are either embellished or interpretations of what we now know of the events of time made to sound like actual experiences of the time. If it is, it really doesn’t need to be. It might be because of the presentational style which is very Hollywood, Docusoap with American pronunciations and colloquialisms
Because the basic story stands up for itself and we who have never been occupied should not overly judge those who have. What I really found of value able was a better understanding of AH, the effects of Op Market Garden (less the UK Para often blinkered view) on the good people of Ned; the effects thereon of the Allies then trying to smash the last of the German resistance (their fight to the end) and, similarly to those experience by the the women and children of Stalingrad, Berlin, Caen et al, the victims of war. It’s a useful snapshot of a wartime experience, the impossibilities of being occupied, told through the eyes of one of our most iconic people, who then did so much for UNICEF.

The Dutch Girl
A wonderfully recounted story of Audrey Hepburn’s childhood with a special focus on her traumatic wartime years in Holland, the inhumanity of the occupying Germans and her lifelong passion for human rights.

Lots of stuff I never knew here.
All fascinating stuff and a story well told though I think Nancy, Jessica, and Deborah Mitford would have had something to say about being lumped in with their Fascist family members. A problem with which Audrey Hepburn might well have been familiar.
