Summary

A decade dead, Jacob Campbell is a preservationist, providing a kind of taxidermy to keep his clients looking lifelike for as long as the forces of entropy will allow. But in the Land of the Dead, where the currency is time itself and there is little for corpses to do but drink, thieve, and gamble eternity away, Jacob abandons his home and his fortune for an opportunity to meet the man who cheated the rules of life and death entirely.

According to legend, the Living Man is the only adventurer to ever cross into the underworld without dying first. It's rumored he met his end somewhere in the labyrinth of pubs beneath Dead City's streets, disappearing without a trace. Now Jacob's vow to find the Living Man and follow him back to the land of the living sends him on a perilous journey through an underworld where the only certainty is decay.

Accompanying him are the boy Remington, an innocent with mysterious powers over the bones of the dead, and the hanged man Leopold l'Eclair, a flamboyant rogue whose criminal ambitions spark the undesired attention of the shadowy ruler known as the Magnate.

An ambitious debut that mingles the fantastic with the philosophical, Dead Boys twists the well-worn epic quest into a compelling, one-of-a-kind work of weird fiction that transcends genre, recalling the novels of China Miéville and Neil Gaiman.

A real surprise.

Generally I have found the books Included with membership average at best. Dead boys, once you get beyond the lame title, is clever, inventive and a fantasy worthy of Neil Gaimen.
The authors narration is also extremely good.
It will make me seek out other titles by him for sure.

Take A Journey Into the Plains Death

This book is a marvel. A mix between Alan Moore’s prose work, Neil Gaiman and William S. Burroughs.

Take a journey to the inevitable beyond.

The characters and world building are exquisite, cast yourselves into the river and be swept away.

Pleasantly surprised

I didn’t really know what to expect from this title, but I was almost immediately absorbed into the world created by the author. Brilliant performance and great story!

Bizarre but excellent

undoubtedly a strange story, but thoroughly entertaining. If you're happy to go with something very different, won't be disappointed.

I really wanted to like this book but for whatever reason I just couldn’t get into it. I’ll wait a while and then try again.

Inspired

I loved this story, its utter fiction brought so many of life's struggles and preconceptions into focus. As I started listening it was just a quirky tale, by the end, I was hooked and left me longing for more

Hugely original story well told

Thanks to the algorithms I took a chance on this book and I’m so glad I did. Neil Gaiman is thrown about here and, yes… but also it’s a unique imagining of the dead world or afterlife. Mythologies inform a visceral, squishy and slightly grotesque world. It’s not usually my thing but I loved the world building and the growing relationship between the characters.

Essentially, it’s a quest with some loose ends but the world and stories within make it resonant. It’s also really well read by the author. Such a great find.

Great Book, very imaginative!

I really liked this book, it is well read and brought to life or should I say death?
It's very gross if I think about it too much but not in a bad way.
The afterlife described its fascinating. I do admit I couldn't imagine rotting corpses and skeletons moving about very well. That didn't stop me from enjoying the characters. They are interesting to follow, I really wanted to know what came next.
I only listened to this in my car on my way to work and home. I don't like to drive and this book made me look forward to the ride.

....

!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!

I found the half open ending satisfying. Everyone had a sort of ending to their story. You knew they were going to be okay. I also loved 'seeing' the stories of their deaths though a little bit more information would have been nice. But I guess it was a story about their deaths and not their lives. Also I wondered what year it was and how long everyone had been dead. One more thing: Pharao Tutanchamun had a short unremarkable reign in life, I wonder why he was so special in his afterlife that they talked about his second reign. Maybe the author used his name because it's so famous now.

Grizzly and good

Not shock horror, no jump scares, just slow building story with very unexpected characters. Recommended.
