Summary
Estes Park, Colorado: picturesque mountains, charming shops, delightful bakeries, a cozy bookstore...and murder.
Winifred Page and her corgi, Watson, move to Estes Park to hit the reset button on life. Fred is about to open her dream bookshop, and the only challenges she anticipates are adjusting to small-town life, tourists, and living close to her loveable mother, Phyllis, and hippy stepfather, Barry.
When Fred steps into her soon-to-be-bookshop for the first time, she expects dust bunnies and spiders...not the dead body in the upstairs kitchen. The local police have an easy suspect - Barry.
Determined to prove quirky Barry innocent of murder, Fred puts on her detective hat, and with Watson by her side, she explores her new town and gets acquainted with her fellow shopkeepers. Could one of her friendly neighbors be the real culprit? And what would be the motive for killing the owner of the Sinful Bites candy store? The secrets Fred discover put her at odds with the local police sergeant and threaten her cozy future in Estes.
With snow falling outside, all Fred wants to do is curl up by the fire with a good book and Watson snuggled at her feet. But before she can begin her new life and put her plans for her bookshop into action, Fred and Watson have a mystery to solve....

What’s not to love about Watson
The narrator of this book has that squeaky accent that normally grates on me and causes me to turn the book off before I get to end of chapter 1, but I was driving and my the time I got to chapter 3 the book story and likeable characters especially Watson had me hooked.
Yes it’s light hearted and the story probably done before but it was throughly enjoyable if not a little too short and so I’m off to download the next book as I need more Watson and this quiet village in my life

Enjoyable but…
Narrators way of making squeaky voices made me think of Fred as a 19 year old girl - which she isn’t, at all, so that messed things up a bit for me. Otherwise I enjoyed it, in the same same way I enjoy watching a lot of so Hallmark Christmas movies in December just to cozy up and zone out with something that doesn’t demand a lot of concentration.

enjoyable
A bit twee but moved along nicely. Nice setting and one could picture the town and surroundings - I'd like to live there! Unusual storyline and villain - I'll probably listen to more in the series but not just yet.

OK
Average. Like in many other reviews, I disliked the irritating voice of the narrator, which made the main character sound like a silly little girl. It was obvious who the murderer was early in the story. However, Watson, the corgi, was a delight with his cute little way of bouncing on his paws when excited. He was also the most intelligent of all the characters!

A cute murder mystery and a good start to a series
Mildred Abbott is a new-to-me author, and I liked her writing style.
What let this down was Angie Hickman's performance. I must confess that she doesn't alter her voice much for the multiple characters. This led me to be confused a few times, wondering who was saying what. This pulled me out of the story and marred my enjoyment of the tale.
The narration aside, this is a solid 4-stars. I'll probably skip the audiobooks and buy the ebooks to see what Fred and Watson get involved with next.

great story
I really liked this story, there was enough interest to keep up the story pace and although it's pretty obvious from the start who the killer was I still found it entertaining.
The narrator did a good job of getting the characters across
All in all a nice cozy mystery and I enjoyed it from start to finish, will definitely be listening to the rest in the series

Fun and entertaining!
I chose this as an audiobook likely to provide light-hearted and easy listening fun. It wasn't disappointing in this respect.
The story was not unusual for its genre but was nicely done.
The characters were fun and those with challenging or unlikeable traits made my knuckles itch, just as I feel the author wanted them to 😅.
I wasn't 100% sure who the killer was for a while but even when you know who the killer is, hearing their motive and how it happened can be surprising or at least interesting in books like these.
It was a little sad that all the Healthy cakes and treats were described as inedible apart from the liquorice. I myself bake loads of healthy alternatives to refined sugar and gluten containing cakes. If I don't tell anyone, they don't notice and ask for the recipe! I also make Raw Organic chocolate using Maple syrup rather than regular sugar, and without dairy, just the Cacao butter in the recipe providing creaminess. I haven't found any chocolate lovers who have disliked them as yet, and have even found some people who generally don't like chocolate who have said that they actually like mine 😯😁. I don't say these things to boast a out my own skills, but rather to illustrate that it is 100% possible to create healthy treats that are delicious! Many 'shop bought' treats are too sugary for my taste but even I can find cakes and treats in tea and coffee shops that offer delicious gluten free and vegan cakes/ bars/ treats. This said, Lois's character was meant to be unsuccessful in her business, and it is totally possible for people to make inedible or unpleasant food in their endeavours to be healthy.😅
Coming back to the story in general, the narration was very good.😁 Also, I absolutely love that the recipe and method for baking Lemon Bars - that Katie makes in the story - is given at the end of the book! I will certainly be having a go at making them - probably with coconut/Palm sugar 😜 !

A wonderfully fun and sweet cozy mystery
Mildred Abbott is my new favourite author. This is a nice easy listen, with some great characters and a cute dog. Angie Hickman is a fantastic narrator, her performance is fun and sincere. I listened to this in one day. I have downloaded the next book.
