Summary

DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's gotten tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.

Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome, squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname, Holy Joe, belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

Great book but narration terrible

I'm just about to embark on the 5th Nikki Galena book and as much as I love the stories, the narration has got to be the worst ever. I was wondering if it was just me so looked back on the reviews and it turns out I'm not alone. The accents aren't great. Joseph sounds like he's got something stuck somewhere uncomfortable and as you go through the series it gets worse - I'm still wondering whether a character in book 4 was Irish or Scottish. I have persevered with the series because the stories are good, if a little more far fetched than Joy Ellis' other detectives. The detectives' backstories continue through the series so it's good to read them in order. Somebody please tell Henrietta that 'SOCO' is not pronounced like 'cocoa'!

Good story

The story was good, unfortunately the narrator was hard to listen to. She read very fast and there was a complete jumble of accents.

Really grating narration at times

Story not as good as her previous Fen based novels but I can’t fully judge as I had to stop listening due to the high pitched, grating accents the narrator used. Her voice is beautiful but the accents were unconvincing and for me, impossible to engage with.

Brilliant series debut

I am so glad I found this series!! A great and gripping story and some amazing and layered characters - naturally I love the heart and soul of Nikki Galena and Joseph Easter! Can’t wait to get into the rest of this series!

Good story

Many other reviews have not been complimentary about the narration which I found surprising . It was clear a good pace and an enjoyable listen I am glad that I did not take a notice of those who did not like it as I would have missed a good story.

Annoying narration and not much storyline

This story was meant to be set on the fens - its clear from the accent that the narrator used for the key characters that she had never visited or needs a geography lesson. The fens isn’t near Scunthorpe.

I also found the story unrealistic and more suitable for setting in London, Manchester etc.

Disappointing Narrator

I am enjoying the storyline in this book, but it is spoilt by the awful narrator. Some of the narrating is ok, for example when the narrator is not trying to give the characters an accent. The narrating of the characters, Nicky and Joseph are dreadful. I don’t know if I can listen to the whole series with this narrator.

Poor narration

Perhaps I was spoilt by Richard Armitage's skill as a storyteller in another Joy Ellis series, but Henrietta Meire's narration failed to engage me. I wanted to enter into their world but was largely unable to do so because I was too conscious of someone merely reading a text. A shame because the storyline was promising.

Shame about the accents

The story is good but the accents are awful. Joseph sounded pompous and Nikki Galena's accent meandered between Welsh,Yorkshire and Lancashire. At one point I went on to Google to find out if there where other Fens in the north of England that I didn't know about. It was a shame and it spoiled the listening experience. I have made a note never to get another book read by Henrietta Meire.
