Summary

It's one giant leap for all boy-kind in Frank Cottrell Boyce's out-of-this-world story: Cosmic, read aloud by actor Daniel Ryan.

Liam is too big for his boots. And his football strip. And his school blazer. But being super-sized height-wise has its advantages: he's the only eleven-year-old to ever ride the G-force-defying Cosmic rollercoaster - or to be offered the chance to drive a Porsche. Long-legged Liam makes a giant leap for boy-kind by competing with a group of adults for the chance to go into space. Is Liam the best boy for the job? Sometimes being big isn't all about being a grown-up.

Critic reviews

"Hilarious and ingenious hymn to dadliness and all things dadly...A thoroughly warmhearted CD with a serious, unsentimental core, perfect for silencing quarrels on long car journeys."(The Daily Telegraph)

Completely Cosmic

Beautifully read and interpreted by Daniel Ryan,
Liam is a twelve year old boy so big and hairy he is always taken for an adult. So when he is 'specially selected' to go on the ride of a lifetime, he passes himself off as the dad of a school friend, Florida, and together they begin their adventures . Liam,s real dad thinks he's on a school trip to the Lake District but really they are way above all of that.
Such fun as well as a boy's eye view of dadliness.
Do listen - it is out of this world enjoyment.

Innovative and engaging...bravo Mr Boyce!

Superb on every level. Boyce manages to weave a superb story involving flash backs, flash forwards and excellent character arcs which will engage children and adults alike. He really nails a child's psyche whilst also providing a clear picture of what it's like to be grown up yearning to be a kid again. Fantastic read.

Brilliant by Tom age 9

I think this book is funny. Also it's interesting that it's an audio diary. I liked Doctor Drax because she is very rich and built the Building of Infinite Possibility. I recommend this book because it has a brilliant storyline and is funny. Also the story is told backwards because you only find out what happened at the launch in the middle of the story.

This was truly COSMIC

a boy stuck in space is a great hook to keep the reader engaged

i like that its done as a audio log of the events that happened which made the audio book really feel like i was listening to a real audio log as i read along with the physical book

one thing i have noticed that maybe a bit formulaic is all the lessons in books by the author all are linked back to something different

Cosmic uses World Of Warcraraft
Framed uses Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Millions uses Saints

but that formula mixed with the humour of this book really works out of the 3 i like this book the most

Funny story about "dadliness"

Any additional comments?

Great story for all the family (loved by a seven-year old girl, a teenage boy and adults in our house). The story takes a funny (and simultaneously terrifying) trip into space while sneaking in a consideration of what it is to be a good father ("dadliness")- sounds like an unlikely combination but this has been one of my teenage son's favourite books for a few years.
