Summary

The year is 1931. The new and luxurious transatlantic liner Empress of Britain is on her eastward passage. Among the first-class passengers on board are two English confidence tricksters, making a discreet exit from a little awkwardness they have left behind them in the United States. A chance meeting on deck brings them a tempting new target in the shape of Miss Charnwood and her niece, the beautiful Diana, only child of the immensely wealthy Fabian Charnwood.

Entrancing

It’s not just the narrator’s voice, his breadth of accents and characterisation- although these are excellent.

It’s not the storyline, although it twists and turns with the smoothness and turn of speed of a Daimler Double 6 on the Dorking road.

It’s these, but set in the post war roaring 30s, teetering still on the heels of the depression era, looking back further to 1914 Sarajevo and the subsequent millions of young lives wasted. It’s the evocation of the lives of the idle rich interspersed with the scheming and intrigue of those that prey upon them. And a premise that might - just might - be the real deal…

Wonderfully authentic mystery and murder

The story is gripping, real, exciting and vivid. Robert Goddard is simply masterful.
Bill Walis narration is absolutely perfect for the story. A very talented performance from both.

One of Goddard's best!

Although a Goddard fan, surprisingly hadn't got around to reading the hardcopy of Closed Circle that's sat on my bookshelf for some considerable time, so came to this Audible recording with no prior knowledge of the thoroughly absorbing mystery I was about to hear.
Two con-artists / fortune hunters, one fatefully, become unwittingly caught up in a deadly circle of a deceit, double-dealings. At the stories heart, a conspiracy theory, a fanciful yet plausible notion as to what caused The Great War / World War One to start when it did. And, the epilogue brings the circle to a very satisfactory conclusion.
Narration by Bill Wallis was faultless, his tone perfectly portraying the 1930's.

Goddard and Wallis, a class double act.

Goddard and Wallis, a classy double act! Goddard's story telling flows from the page, truly a wordsmith of note, and Bill Wallis's
rich melodious voice compliments and enhances the book even more.

Quality

Excellent story, though for me it felt far too drawn out and containing too many twists and turns. But then it was written at a time where patience was still a virtue and TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and the ever shortening attention span of today, didn’t exist. As for narration, it was excellent: articulate and modulated, never boring, not monotone. Having said that, as with other audiobooks, I wish the people who commission the voice actors would take into account the age of the narrator and engage accordingly. This is not a sign of age discrimination, only a desire for reality being injected in story telling.

Complicated & clever

The headline applies to pretty much all of Robert Goddard's books, I read all of them, some time ago, & am now I'm listening to some of them, The narrator is excellent. If anything, this plot is slightly more complex than some & I did find it hard to follow in places. It's easier to turn back an actual page, should you need to. But I would call anything by Robert Goddard a good listen.

A Desperate Journey Through the Early 30s

All of the Robert Goddard stories I have read so far have involved a pursuit of some kind. This time there is a shadowy international organisation, a beautiful and possibly dangerous female companion and layer upon layer of deceipt. I was reminded of the 39 steps.
