Summary

National Best Seller

The electrifying first novel of an all-new fantasy series from the legendary author behind the Shannara saga, about a human girl struggling to find her place in a magical world she’s never known

“Enticing ... Brooks’s fans will be thrilled to have a new series to savor.” (Publishers Weekly)

At 19, Auris Afton Grieg has led an...unusual life. Since the age of 14, she has been trapped in a Goblin prison. Why? She does not know. She has no memories of her past beyond the vaguest of impressions. All she knows is that she is about to age out of the children’s prison, and rumors say that the adult version is far, far worse. So she and some friends stage a desperate escape into the surrounding wastelands. And it is here that Auris’ journey of discovery begins, for she is rescued by a handsome yet alien stranger.

Harrow claims to be Fae - a member of a magical race that Auris had thought to be no more than legend. Odder still, he seems to think that she is Fae as well, although the two look nothing alike. But strangest of all, when he brings her to his wondrous homeland, she begins to suspect that he is right. Yet how could a woman who looks entirely Human be a magical being herself?

Told with a fresh, energetic voice, this fantasy puzzle box is Terry Brooks as you have never seen him before, as one young woman slowly unlocks truths about herself and her world - and, in doing so, begins to heal both.

Critic reviews

Child of Light is enchantingly feral. Precise in his prose, clever in his worldbuilding, Brooks stretches new muscles to explore a young woman’s quest for identity. The pace is rapid as a river, but this one twists hard and runs deep.”—Pierce Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“With a unique setting that is a heady dystopic blend of mysticism and the future, Child of Light is an otherworldly adventure from the fertile mind of one of the most beloved storytellers of our generation.”—Wesley Chu, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The War Arts Saga

“An enticing new mystery. . . . Auris is a tough but enchanting protagonist, and the page-turning mystery of her magical origins form the novel’s heart. Brooks’s fans will be thrilled to have a new series to savor.—Publishers Weekly

starts ok but drifts away and ends up dull

the story is repetitive with the same events happening again and again. the 'twists' are seeable a mile off. as with terry brooks, there is strange sexual stuff which would be inappropriate for a minor. the narration is dull and lifeless and, although it is a new world, it seems very much like word and the void and shannara, his other books. i wish he'd go back and fill the gaps in shannara and leave the increasingly sexual elements of his work, some seeming inappropriate,

i won't bother with book 2

Child of Light a fabulous new Terry Brooks series

I just love it. Another masterpiece from Terry Brooks who is my favourite fantasy writer. The narrator was new to me, but handled the difference characters very well. The story line was infectious from the first line, it hooked me in straight away. And the ending twist was just brilliant. Already pre-booked the next instalment. Happy days.

Not a TB great

When you grow up on the original Shannara trilogy, the bar has been set, and unfortunately this was way below. I powered through the audiobook hoping that it would get better and it didn't. The narrator seemed to opt for 'whine' as the default for the lead character and after a while it became too much. Overall a real disappointment.

Dull

Not a fan but the narration was good. Story was just not interesting, nothing popped directly out as bad but just was boring & didn’t make me like the characters.

Dribble

No depth, no characters, no feeling, no colour and no detail. First time I’ve not been able to finish a book on audible. Utter dribble

I don't usually stop half way through an audiobook

I just couldn't get into this book at all. The constant whining of the main character drove me to quit. The narrator tries her best but she just sounds miserable because that's what the character is. The whole "I've just met this guy but I love him" trope is pretty ridiculous to me. Her knowledge, for someone with no memory of her life before being locked in prison, is just stupid and unbelievable.

Too many clichés, an instantly dislikeable main character, and side characters who annoy more than please, are not something I look for in a good audiobook. Every "twist" that happened could be seen by a blind man a mile away.

I'm sure some people will like the book. It's not badly written, if you like teen love fiction, but just not what I expect from a good fantasy novel.
