Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Charity Steane has nothing in the world but hope.

Escaping a miserable life under her tyrannical aunt, she decides to take her chances with her estranged grandfather in London. Now it's just a matter of finding him.... And as a 'charity girl' with no dowry and no options, hope can only get her so far.

But with the help of the dashing and kind-hearted Desford and his dearest friend Hetta, it seems like Charity's fortunes might be about to change.

That is, until the surprise appearance of a long-lost relative throws things into chaos and suddenly the three friends find themselves surrounded by blackmail and scandal.

Will their efforts to do right by each other plunge them all into ruin?

Critic reviews

"Absolutely delicious tales of Regency heroes [...] Utter, immersive escapism." (Sophie Kinsella)

"I could mainline Heyer's Regency romances until the end of time and still not get bored [...] Georgette Heyer is perfect lockdown escapism." (India Knight)

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's." (Joanne Harris)

One of my favourite books

I don’t like a male narrator I prefer Phyllida Nash or somebody like that reading

Delightful story

This is well up to the standard of Georgette Heyer"s other tales. Hugh Skinner reads charmingly in general but needs to work harder on female voices. This issue however was not enough to detract from my enjoyment of this delightful escapism

Ok story, off-putting narration

Not one of my favourite Georgette Heyer stories, but main problem was the narrator isn't good at doing the female voices. The voice for Cherry in particular reminded me of Monty Python women - which didn't make for the best listening experience! Will probably avoid this narrator next time.

Great romp of a story

This is classic Heyer, strong female characters a real variety of people, ridiculous situations and great humour. The narrator is good, but Charity could have done with a nicer voice. I just wish that the narrators realised that these books are funny! Almost all of them read them straight, despite the clearly comic nature of them.

Typically excellent Georgette story

Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the very good
Tale. I was not happy with the
Reading of the tale disappointing voices of the persons in the tale. Wondering how it would be with a lady reader.

Good story but poor narration

Not one of Heyer’s absolute best regency stories but still good fun. The narration, as others have pointed out, was really let down by the female voices especially Cherry’s. It does make her sound like a Monty Python character which is irritating and distracting. Many of the male voices however are excellent and luckily it’s a male dominated story. Also the narrator’s pronunciation of chagrin - which came up surprisingly often! - was off. I wouldn’t chose another title narrated by him.

Loved it!

I don’t understand the previous reviews saying that they disliked the narration. I really loved it. The differing voices the narrator gave the characters were brilliant, especially those of Cherry and Hetty’s mama. I read all of Georgette Heyer’s stories when I was about 15 (many moons ago!) and I am just now rediscovering her books and enjoying them even more. Thank-you for these productions.

Typical Georgette Heyer

lighthearted, innocent and fun. A different story every time and now another to add to my collection

Poor narrator

This is not one of Heyer’s best novels but still a delightful story.
Hugh Skinner is a good comedic actor so am very surprised at his frankly awful narration. Lacks any humour or engagement with the story. His female voices are frankly ridiculous. Very surprised this was ever released.

Unfortunate voice for Charity

Not the best GH story, but it would have been be vastly improved if the narrator, perfectly competent in all the other roles, had chosen a less nauseating voice to use for the title character
