Summary
On assignment in Vienna, photographer Ian Jarrett falls suddenly and desperately in love with a woman he meets by pure chance, Marian Esguard. Back in England, he separates from his wife and goes to meet Marian at an agreed rendezvous, only to hear her tell him on the telephone that she will not, after all, be coming. Then she vanishes from his life as mysteriously as she entered it.
Who and where is the woman he met and fell in love with in Vienna?

What a duo!
There are some combinations of author/narrator which are just perfect. This is one of them. So much emotion expressed through the writing and telling.

Brilliant read of a great story
I always enjoy Michael Kitchen’s understated style. He is very easy to listen to. This was also a gripping story with lots of plot twists. I thoroughly recommend it.

Not what I expected
Well, this is the second Robert Goddard novel I've listened to now, read by the excellent Michael Kitchen. Goddard obviously has an interest in the spiritual world, as is evident in the two books I've listened to. I have wondered sometimes if Michael Kitchen felt just a little embarrassed when reading certain lines (I don't think dialogue is Goddard's strength), however, as an actor he has the ability to transport the listener into a make-believe world. This particular make-believe world sometimes verges on the Mills and Boon but is entertaining nonetheless simply listening to the narrator tell the story.

Excellent reading of a well crafted story
One of the best Audible books I have heard. A sensitive reading of a story that maintains a focus on the photographic core.

Not my favourite but worth a listen
I enjoyed the beginning of this book more than the end which, intentionally unresolved, felt slightly annoying. The chapters written further in the past didn't feel as authentic as when the author writes about the turn of the century in other novels and were a tad too bodice-ripping for me. However it was so beautifully read by Michael Kitchen, as always, that it made it worth the listen.

Usual quality from Robert Goddard
Story is, as usual, from Robert Goddard, great, but it has an unhappy ending, which is a bit of a downer, but realistic I guess.
Michael Kitchen could read a telephone directory and I’d listen to it, so overall loved the listen

Niggling holes in the plot
First time I’ve listened to a Robert Goddard book.
Kept getting mixed thoughts on some parts of the plot. Some issues included;
What year was it set?
Despite mentions of mobile phones the characters all to often do not use them.
Even in the late nineties the internet did exist so why not make use of it for research?
How does the Lead character pay for Hotels, Ferry’s, Air Fares and other expenses when he was a) not earning b) estranged from his wife and daughter.
That said liked the plots and it’s twists
Michael Kitchen’s narration was excellent

My favourite Goddard & Kitchen loved it
Bereft now it is gone, a collaboration of two artists at the top of their game.
