Summary

First the large, powerful feline discovers that, through some strange, inexplicable phenomenon, he now has the ability to understand human language. Then he discovers he can speak it as well! It’s a nightmare for a cat who’d prefer to sleep the day away carefree, but Joe can handle it. That is, until he has the misfortune to witness a murder in the alley behind Jolly’s Deli - and worse, to be seen witnessing it. With all of his nine lives suddenly at risk, Joe’s got no choice but to get to the bottom of the heinous crime - because his mouse-hunting days are over for good unless he can help bring a killer to justice.

I loved this!!!✨🐈🐈‍⬛🐾🐾🔍

After listening to the sample, I downloaded this title from the ' Included ' list , and I am so glad I did! Shirley Rousseau's writing and Susan Boyce's narration had me feeling extremely anxious for the well-being of certain characters during parts of the story, and so I had to keep listening to find out what happened to them! The crime element of the story begins with a murder, but more is uncovered as you progress through this compelling tale. I confess that I massively binged out on this audiobook! 😅😍

It is a beautifully written supernatural crime/ mystery story, with just the right level of descriptiveness. The characters - both human and feline - are well formed and either lovable, likeable it detestable. The environments, whether indoors, out in nature, in the town or within a building (homes, businesses, library, police station etc) are also described skillfully.

The storyline - whilst involving the supernatural - mostly takes place in the natural world, as experienced by either human or cat. For me, this seemed to make the supernatural elements of the story almost believable.

I believe this is part of a series of stories, and there are more titles in it for me to devour, so I am very much looking forward to finding out what happens next! 😬🫣😅🐾🐾🐾🐈‍⬛🐈

Interesting

Good story, only mildly spoiled by reader having not the remotest idea of a Welsh accent, thus giving the Welsh character an intermittent Belfast accent, when she remembered to, otherwise the Welsh man had a normal American accent!

Most unusual

When l finally got my head around it, l really enjoyed this novel book. Well thought out flowed well. As a cat lover it seemed almost possible that these cats were capable of all in the storyline.Enjoy.

Shame about the accent

Loved this but clearly the narrator has no clue as to the difference between an Irish and Welsh accent!!!

Loved it

An absolute delight, just what I needed to lift me out of a depression. The idea of talking cats woven into a crime story was beautifully executed and not silly at all. There's also a bit of a twist to this idea. Some reviewers commented on the narrators Welsh accent being off..this takes up a tiny, tiny bit of the story, isn't even worth thinking about if you're considering giving this book a listen. I'm looking forward to listening to the next book in the series.

"Hello, Joe Grey."

A cat lover my whole life, I was intrigued by the idea of a detective cat who was able not just to understand the strangeness of humans and solve crimes but to also speak back to them in English. And, as it turns kut, Joe Grey was not the only feline with this ability. Cats can often go where humans cannot do the plot was interesting if rather protracted. Narration by Susan Boyce was good although occasional brief pauses seemed to indicate a previous unfamiliarity with the text. Good character voices, though.

This was a reasonable read, especially given that it is free to hear via the Audible Plus scheme for all members of Audible.co.uk. But not nearly as pleasurable as the The Cat Who ... series by Lilian Jackson Brain where the very cat like Siamese, Koko, might not speak English but can certainly communicate with her associate , Jim Qwilleran. What a pity these marvellous books have never been listed in Audible.

Feline(?) heroes

I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it is definitely not what I had expected. It was hard going, to begin with and I stuck with it. Then I couldn’t stop listening. Very nice to listen to a fresh take on cats.

what if cats could tell what they've seen

I loved this. Though there were many storylines, they did tie together neatly. I had some trouble with the imagery, but the overall picture is clear. The narrator did a good job with intonation that made the story easy to listen to and follow. Now I'll have to watch my cats even more carefully. What if they have human traits?!
