Summary
Dark Isle off the Florida coast is said to be cursed: drownings, disappearances and hauntings have been the fate of intruders. The people who lived there were once enslaved. Now abandoned, it is the target of greedy developers.
Lovely Jackson is the last survivor and claims to be its legal owner. But there is not a shred of evidence to prove that is true.
It's unlikely that the developers will be deterred by the claims of one old woman. They have millions; Lovely only has Steve Mahon, a pro bono environmental lawyer, and Mercer Mann, a floundering novelist, to fight in her corner.
With the court case looming and the bulldozers waiting to roll in, Steve and Mercer are in a race against time to unearth the truth behind Lovely's story and save the legacy of the island.
Praise for Camino Winds:
'In American icon John Grisham's new novel, Camino Winds, an odd assortment of mystery and crime authors, some of them felons themselves, discover one of their colleagues has been murdered during the fury of a massive hurricane-the perfect crime scene' Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing
'The Camino Island series, featuring trouble-prone bookseller Bruce Cable, is a perfect escapist mix of detective action, insider riffs on the literary world - and even a little romance' Mail on Sunday
'Camino Winds has all the usual Grisham hallmarks - a pacy plot and tension-filled scenes' Independent
'Another compelling read from Grisham, and will satisfy old fans and please new readers alike' Press Association
Camino Ghosts was a Sunday Times top five bestseller in the first week of June 2024.

A wonderful story on how ordinary people overcame the fat cats desires to own everything in Florida. Tells a haunting story of how the Europeans behaved in capturing slaves and shipping them to America. And whilst WHoopi Goldbergs narration was probably appropriate for the story it sort off grated o my nerves

Much better
It was a relief that the author was back on form after some disappointing stories.

The story
Whilst she is a great actor, she is not a good book reader sorry. The story is excellent.

A great story surprisingly spoiled by the reader
This most recent story about inhabitants of Camino Island is as good and enthralling as the other two – John Grisham never let you down with a story.
Incredibly, I found Whoopi Goldberg’s performance to be clumsy and sufficiently poor to be irritating. Had she been from the deep south and brought an authentic accent then maybe I could understand it but she’s from New York and really brought nothing positive to this excellent book at all.
It’s a John Grisham and I listened to it to the end and thoroughly enjoyed it but I was genuinely surprised at how bad Goldberg’s performance was

Wonderful story and superb, moving narration
I’m a big fan of John Grisham and his Camino book series in particular but this story is a class above his other excellent books. A truly fascinating account movingly narrated by the incomparable Whoopie. A privilege to listen to her rendition. Loved it!

Bit of a disappointment.
The story repeated itself, a lot. It was quite predictable. whilst Whoopi Goldberg is very talented being an actor, comedian, author and television personality, narration is not one of her strong points.

Not John Grisham’s best
The reading by Whoopi Goldberg is excellent, but this is one of John Grisham’s best books - and I have read all of them.
I won’t give anything else away.

Totally absorbing
This is the third and best in the series about Camino Island. It easily stands alone. I was surprised by how much the listening experience was elevated by the narration from Whoopi Goldberg. I've spent so much time listening to her that I'm sorry to come to the end.
An Audible favourite for me.

The history
No pace, too much padding, undeveloped characters. I usually enjoy John Grisham books, but this is definitely one of his least enjoyable novels.
