Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Buried, the fifth installment of the Department Q series by Jussi Adler-Olsen, read by Steven Pacey.

More than three years ago, a civil servant vanished after returning from a work trip to Africa. Though he's missing and presumed dead, the man's family still want answers.

It is one of the many unsolved crimes left for Department Q, Denmark's cold-case unit headed up by Detective Carl Morck.

But what Carl doesn't know is that the key to the investigation is in Copenhagen. Fifteen-year-old Marco Jameson is tough, smart, and suspicious of police. Sleeping rough and hiding in the shadows is his way of life. But what is he running from - and what does he know worth killing him for?

Please note: This book has also been published under the alternate title The Marco Effect.

Excellent performance - good storyline

An absorbing read with plenty of suspense. Stephen Pacey does a good job on the narration. Highly recommended

Brilliant Book, Superb Narrator

What did you like most about Buried?

The human and realistic stories within the narrative and the humour contained in the developing relationships between Carl and his assistants Assad (who's story is being revealed bit by bit book by book) and the quirky Rose.

What other book might you compare Buried to, and why?

All five of the Department Q books are in a league of their own - well-crafted and off-setting any grimness with moments of laughter. I haven't read any other murder mysteries that can compare. Steven Pacey's rendition really brings life to the characters.

Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey’s other performances? How does this one compare?

All Department Q books are brilliantly read by Steven Pacey. His use of different voices and dialects makes it is easy to recognise the individual characters and Carl, Assad, Rose and Carl's 'house guests' have developed into real personalities through the excellent narration. I will certainly seek out more narrated by Mr Pacey!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I tried to pace myself as I never want any Department Q book to end!!

Any additional comments?

Please Mr Adler-Olsen write more Department Q books and, whoever makes the decision, please please use Steven Pacey as the narrator. After 5 books he is the only true voice for Department Q. I am horrified to see that someone different is reading Book 6 and having read at least 30 Audible reviews for Book 6 I will sadly not be buying the Audio version :(

On form

Steven Pacey really brings these books to life. Best one for a while - a return to form and well concluded

Good listen but not up to previous stories

I was looking forward to this new audio book but it is overlong. The story is good, but does not have the gripping power of the last 4 books. On saying that it is a good listen and I will certainly listen to book 6 when it comes out, just a bit disappointed with this story.

Exceptional story telling.

Well worth the credit, Jussi Adler-Olsen is gifted. Department Q is the best crime series I've encountered for donkey's years. Long may it continue. Steven Pacey brings the characters alive wonderfully.

Excellent as usual

Another instalment of Dept Q. The usual characters. A mixture of crime, social commentary, humour and intrigue. All adds up to a great listen. As usual the narration is excellent

Another great Department Q story - gripping

I did struggle in the first chapter as it was so far removed from Dept Q - I even had to check I was listening to the right book - however you soon realise this is absolutely necessary to support and explain the rest of the plot. I was gripped. The interaction between the Dept Q team is equally funny, sad and mysterious. I loved it. Having read the previous 4 books I hope there are still more to come

Thoroughly engrossing ..performed to perfection

I am not reading the books in order it but I started with one and became hooked to the style
And the fabulous delivery by Steven Pacey
The stories are all fascinating and because the names and place names are read out it does not slow the flow of the
Unfolding mystery ..I feel I understand the layout of the area of the offices and the city
The way the characters interact is clever and witty
I had to make more time to listen as it was just so engaging
A fabulous book

The best so far

Having listened to the other four books in the Department Q series and thoroughly enjoying them, "Buried" turned out to be the best so far. Stephen Pacey is excellent as a narrator providing a range of convincing accents for the numerous characters from different lands. Jussi Alder-Olsen cleverly alternates between the fast-paced action on the streets and the humour within the Department Q office. This is a refreshing series from the bleakness of other Scandi noir fiction and thoroughly recommended.
