Summary

We all need to know where we come from, where we belong. But for David and Nathalie, this need to know is even more urgent, since they are adopted. Brought up by the same parents but born to two different mothers, they have grown up as brother and sister, and share a fierce loyalty.Their decision, in their late thirties, to embark upon the journey to find their birth mothers is no straightforward matter.

It affects, acutely and often painfully, their spouses and children, the people they work with, and, most poignantly, the two women who gave them up for adoption all those years ago, and who have since made other lives, even borne other children.

Exploring her subject with inimitable imagination and humanity, Joanna Trollope once again works her storytelling magic. In this rich narrative, at once gritty and graceful, she exposes the extraordinary challenged that arise at the heart of ordinary lives. Read by Lindsay Duncan.

A good listen

Really enjoyable audio book, dealing with a challenging subject in what I found to be a pretty realistic way. Excellent narration too.

A tender story looking at adoption from many points of view

Beautifully read by Lindsay Duncan. There’s also the trademark child Trollope uses to lighten things up. I found this novel very thought provoking about an issue I’ve not given too much thought to. In true Trollope style situations fall apart before they can be put back together again but nothing will remain the same.

Ok but not her best

Have listened to better audio books but it was ok but not one I would listen to again . The equivalent of a holiday ok to pass the time but not fantastic
The reader was excellent had someone else been doing the narration I might not have stuck with it

Thought provoking

An interesting well written story about the effect tracing birth parents has on all family members from both families.
I did not like the troubled Brother and Sister so it became a challenging listen.
Great performance by the narrator, although the middle class child voice was accurately irritating.
